Feeling sick

Just whining a bit here.

Had surgery on Thursday and Surprise! --also a hernia repair.

I know how important it is to keep up with fluids, but honestly, everything makes me want to throw up. Today, I've had a bottle of water, a cup of broth, a single serving of SF jello and a half cup of diluted juice.

I'm nauseous, dizzy and I don't know if I'm doing anything right. My centre's book doesn't talk much about early post op. If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them, cause right now I feel like crap.

The most important thing you can do is to keep your fluid intake up - constant small sips of water, broth, protein shake. The fear here is dehydration and you do not want to be playing "catch-up". Dehydration will actually cause nausea, vomiting and dizziness, so it's a catch-22. Take Gravol when needed to help with the nausea. I hope you're feeling better today.

I stole a stack of those little cups from the hospital and would fill them up and lay them out so I had a visual reference to make sure I was drinking constantly. I'm just over 6 weeks post op and I'm still meeting water requirements but I'm getting close. Good luck and feel better soon.

Try to remember your body has just been to hell and back, and is adjusting.Plus you also had the hernia repair, so it has alot of healing to do. Plus it has only been approx 3 days since your surgery. Take your time, and do your best to get your fluids in, it is hard. Just try to follow the plan the best you can. If you are concerned by all means call the clinic. But I honestly think your body needs time to heal. Are you running a fever? If you are the please contact the clinic. Good Luck, I hope you recoup real soon. :-)

Thanks so much for your advice everyone! I couldn't imagine trying to do this without the support of this wonderful forum...

I think I got over the hump today. I'm still a bit woozy but I got in 8 cups of fluid today. Yay me!

Hi Beth, so sorry to hear you weren't feeling well. Just keep up with the fluids, that's the most important. There will be better days ahead. A.
