Medic Alert?

Hi folks, happy Sunday!

As a pre-op, I'm still doing copious amounts of research, and I have come across (more than a few times now), the need for a Medic Alert tag.

What are your thoughts?  Not necessary?  Better safe than sorry?

Thanks Annette, yes, I should have been more specific.

Medic Alert tags strictly for WLS.

Perfect, then in my humble opinion, no it's not necessary.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago because,  like you, I read that it was a good idea to have one. I had it engraved with the surgery type, as well as "No Blind NG Tube, No Sugar, No NSAIDS", based on what they site I ordered it from suggested. I ordered from a site called Lauren's Hope that had tons of really nice ones that don't actually look like typical medic alert bracelets.

I thought it was better to be safe than sorry, especially since the Emergency Department at my local hospital doesn't know much about gastric bypass--I know this because I was there a couple of weeks ago and when I told the doctor what I'd had done, he asked me if I had any diagrams explaining it. So you just never know what might happen or where you might be if something does happen.

I ordered mine from Lauren's Hope too!  Great minds... and yes, I remember thinking of your incident with an ER doctor who didn't know what RNY was (!) so I thought it was important to have one, especially for travelling abroad.

I was recently at my 3 yr appointment. I was told it was a good idea to have the tube alert. Personally I would not get the nsaid. If I am unconscious and they think it will ave my life I figure go for it

I don't have one because there is nothing that can be done to me in an ambulance/hospital setting that would affect me because of my surgery.

NSAIDS are not to be taken in the long term, one time to reduce the affects of a heart attack are fine. Sugar isn't good but to prevent a diabetic coma is fine. Not sure about tubing as a breathing tube goes into your lungs, not your stomach right?

I think you are overthinking things and a medical alert bracelet isn't going to save your life.
