Surgery at Ottawa Hospital - Pain Study?
Wondering if anyone here has had the Surgery at the Ottawa Civic and was part of the pain study? I think it was started in July this year. Sorry I don't remember the exact title of what it is called.
Basically they are doing a study by administering pain medication at the start of the surgery by spraying this medication into your body cavity before surgery starts. The same medication they use for Gynecology surgeries. You sign up for it, the surgeon is either given medication or saline, you will never know what you were given. They do some pain testing after your surgery and record the results. They're trying to get it approved for use on RNY surgery.
Anyone heard of that or have agreed to do it? I signed the paper to go ahead and do it, but can ultimately decide the day of.
I participated in the case study regarding the use of Ropivacaine. Not a big deal. You fill out a questionnaire before surgery, then walk a designated path for ? minutes then you're done. Just before surgery, you have to blow in a tube to check how far you can blow and then again the day after surgery every couple of hours. Then you walk the same distance to compare with your first try after surgery. You will walk the same distance again at your 1 week apt. at the OWMC. Fill out again the same questionnaire and you're done.
Let's put it this way...I loved the pain medication. But it wasn't that bad. I walked and walked and walked to help with the gaz also. I loved Dr. Yelle. Liked that he talked french and was very nice. He took the time to answer the million questions I had. Super nice. You'll be in good hands and the staff at Civic is amazing. One week!!! Good luck!
