I went and seen my family doctor last week because of some leg cramps I had been having and this major issue with itching..like almost make myself bleed itchy...he sent me for some blood work and I got a call today saying my liver is enlarged and they want me to have an ultrasound asap.  Has anyone else ever had any issues post op with their liver?  I'll be 9 weeks out tomorrow.

Unfortunately, YES. Not necessarily caused by WLS, since my RNY was 8 1/2 years ago, but yes indeed.

What would you like to know?

I had high ALT levels about 9 months after my surgery.  I was sent to a liver specialist and had to go several tests.  All of the results came back normal and my ALT is now normal 2 years after surgery. I was advised that my high ALT was probably caused by losing weight so fast.  Good luck.

Ok, thank you!  Makes me feel a bit better.  I was just looking to see what the out comes were if other people had the same issue.

I'm glad you feel better I guess, but you didn't ask anything at all.

I think I assumed you wanted further details.

If your liver is enlarged and you have the terrible itch you've described (it truly is the worst, isn't it - nothing you can do/take to fix that either unfortunately) and your doctor is requesting an ultrasound of your liver, take this very seriously.

Weight loss & anesthesia can cause this. Be careful with any pain meds now. As all the Tylenol based products (only ones we can take) are metabolized by the liver. Be sure to check with your physician for guidance

The itch is almost unbearable...and I had a sleeve so I'm able to take nsaids still.  I have only taken them once since surgery though.

I tried everything for the itch - creams, calamine lotion, Benedryl.... nothing at all worked until the heavy doses of meds prescribed to assist my liver kicked in (months later). I remember how awful that was, sorry you are going through it!
