Low blood sugar, what now?

When I went in for my 10 week check in with the nurse and nutritionist, I told them that I had a few episodes of being lightheaded. I couldn't really relate them to eating any different than normal.  It came out that my dad was diabetic so has a glucometer and I was told to check my blood sugar when I was feeling dizzy.  My dad gave me a spare meter and taught me how to use it. He told me that he was told not to drive if his level was less than 6.  My nurse told me that less than 5 was low.  Well, I just checked and it was 3.  Thing is, they never told me what to do if it was low.  What do I do?  How does it happen when I have done nothing different today than usual?

this is very serious and I hope you are feeling better now!!! You need to eat a fast acting sugar when you feel low sugar symptoms.....such as sweating, trembling hands, tiredness, vision going wacky!  3 is LOW!!!  You can buy fast acting glucose tablets at a pharmacy to carry in your purse, or even life savers.....orange juice..... Please let us know you are OK

Thanks Crissy I'm ok. Had some OJ, my sugar is over 4 now. I still feel kind of woozy.  I will call the centre tomorrow and get some advice.

I use 2 Dex 4 tabs chewable and follow that with an Oh Yeah bar, then recheck blood sugar in 15 minutes.  This is very important and you need to talk with the dietician.  If left untreated you may pass out.  This is also very hard on your body.  I find that I am exhausted after one of these episodes.  I fainted twice, fortunately in my house, this can be painful depending where you and how you land.  There is also a possibility of losing your licence.  Please call your centre tomorrow.

Thanks Laurie,  I drank some orange juice and ate some crackers with peanut butter and my blood sugar is up to 4.3.  I still feel sort of out of it, but I have nothing but couch time planned for tonight.  I will definitely be calling the clinic tomorrow.  It's pretty scary because I really can't see why this happened to me today. If anything I had fewer carbs than normal today.

if you had fewer carbs than normal, that would explain the lower blood sugar.  4.3 is still too low.  I am not sure if you can stomach the sugar/carbs without dumping....but I agree....the crackers and PB are a good cure too, although that wouldn't raise your sugars up fast enough if you were too low like earlier today!  Girl you  have me freaked right out for you!  Let us know what they tell you tomorrow please

Early out this can happen if you wait too long to eat.  Always have carbs WITH protein.   Carbs raise your blood sugar. Protein helps maintain.
