I have GWL and as others have said I didn't tell them anything.
I did call to confirm that I had semi private room coverage, and had to give the hospital my insurance information so I wouldn't be charged. I also made sure I had prescription coverage for the meds that I was given after surgery.

I had Manulife, not GWL, for my short-term disability but I imagine it's a similar process. They gave me a form to have my surgeon sign and that was it. My surgeon did indicate the type of surgery and expected recovery. I had no problem getting my time off (5 weeks + 1 week gradual return). It kind of is their business, they need to know the nature of your disability for their claim. Your employer however does not need to know.
