I would go to TWH but I'm on disability and can't afford to pay for parking. So I'm hoping to find one more local.

In addition to Pat's information about "surgery angels" - there isn't an official list anymore apparently BUT... that doesn't mean that you can't ask someone that you've connected with here to be your "angel".  It's a nice opportunity to have someone to lean on a little who may have a little more experience than you.

Edited to add: Since you are in Mississauga, please join in our "cawfee talk" nights! Also, there is a lunch happening in Mississauga on September 6th that you are most welcome to attend!

I kept the list with the surgery list.  People would ask me to give them an angel and then complain about who they had. There were only so many people who volunteered. Or they would get one and then never communicate with them. Would get their own but not tell the person who had volunteered to help them.

All in all just too frustrating

No one else wanted the job so I just discontinued it.

Yes, I know it was kept with the surgery list and you're right, it wasn't used often. I assumed it became redundant (for whatever reason) - sad to hear that people had some bad experiences tho!

P.S. I appreciate you taking over the list - it's a lot of work. xo

Where do they meet in Mississauga? What are cawfee talk nights?

It's an informal support group that I host in Clarkson. We meet about once per month for coffee and a chat. We're actually having a larger get together on Saturday September 6th (link below for info) for lunch. Wonderful group of people (mostly from here) of pre-ops, post-ops, just-thinking-about-its, support people. We'd love to have you join us!

I haven't set a night for coffee in September yet but it will likely be the 16th. We always meet at Tims's on Lakeshore in Clarkson (1785 Lakeshore Road West) and I'll post on the board about it.

Here's a link to the lunch details:

Check out couchsurfing.org. Its a travel community. I'm a member but haven't been active for quite some time. Not sure if things are the same, but if they are, people pretty much offer rooms in their homes that travelers can stay in temporarily for no charge. Of course, you would want to be selective in who you choose to stay with, but it's legit. I have several friends who are active and have had travelers from all over the world stay with them free of charge. Hope this helps.

Best,

Thanks, I'll check it out.

The biggest problem is Mom doesn't know Toronto, and panics when she gets lost. It won't be a problem getting her here, as I'm probably going to drive her from Ottawa myself. It's getting from the hotel/place to the hospital and back.

Usually, the person/family who takes you in, is more than willing to take you around to show off the sights or help out in other ways (at least this has been my experience and understanding in the past). I'm truly hoping this will work out for you and your family. My fingers are crossed for you!!!

I remember from reading the boards years ago (when I was first considering WLS) there were "angels" but never was quite sure what that meant. Can anyone elaborate?
