Hi all just wondering if anyone knows if Ontario Dr's are allowing more pre-ops to choose their surgery...or are they still basically just going with the gold standard RNY. I know 2 years ago it was everyone getting the RNY unless medically needed they would not get the sleeve. Just curious.

5 yrs of research Starting for the second time...Referral Sept 28/17. Orientation Guelph Sept 28/17. Nurse Oct 10/17. Dietician & Social worker Nov. 21/17

It's actually not the Dr's who make the policy but OHIP.  OHIP cover RNY if either 1) BMI over 40 or 2) BMI over 35 plus you have comorbidities e.g. High blood pressure, diabetes, etc.  OHIP  will cover the sleeve if you qualify for RNY but cannot medically have RNY e.g. Take NSAIDs for severe arthritis etc.  OHIP will also cover the sleeve if your BMI is over 50 and it is done as a first step towards a and eventual RNY.  Of course they can't actually force you on the operating table the second time - so if your BMI is over 50 you can choose the sleeve first and it will be covered.

Yet, it should be a first step towards a DS, not RNY. People who are lucky enough to be with Dr. Hong in Hamilton have a great option.

Small numbers though. Less than 10-20 DS per year in this province!
