Opti Fast and gum
on 6/13/14 4:25 am - Waterloo, Canada
Can someone please tell me if you are allowed to chew sugar-free gum while on opti fast? I know that post-surgery you are not suppose to as you might swallow it. I really don't mind Opti other than my mouth is constantly bored and my breath is nasty. Or does someone have a suggestion for dry mouth? Thanks!
Yes, I chewed alot of gum has my mouth was very dry while on optifast.I am 9 months out and still chew gum. They say it causes gad build up but I have no issues.

My centre said chewing gum was okay on Opti, but they limited us to 20 extra calories per day. As long as the SF gum was within those limits, it was okay to chew. Check with your centre to make sure you are following their program if you chew gum. It might be something they don't permit because of extra calories.
Post-op, my centre said no gum because you may swallow it. I am not a "may" swallow it kinda girl! That stuff goes in the garbage when I'm done; I'm very conscientious about it. So I have no trouble chewing gum post-op. It does not give me gas or pain and I only chew maybe 4-5 pieces per week.
