It's not his choice, either get on a waiting list for a new GP or remind him that he accountable to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. There is clearly a conflict of interest if he has a weight loss business, even if he didn't he CANNOT not refer you based on his own opinions.

I would assume also that his opinions are not scientific based but those of a narrow minded ass.

We are our own best health care advocates.

Im from North Bay also, my family doctor always told me i should be able to lose weight on my own. Then he referred me to Dr. Bowker because of diabetes and a drug the diabetic clinic wanted me to use that he was not familiar with.  Dr Bowker recommended gastric bypass & referred me then my doctor was all for it and has been very supportive. Good luck, hope you can get a referral.

Hi Karen...I'm originally from NB.  I've kept my family doctor there since I live in the far north and the health care up here is awful  If you go to the walk in clinic in Dr Senior's office on Josephine St off McEwen...Shoppers Drug Mart building ...on a Monday night Dr. Senior is attending so ask to see him and bring as much medical info as possible with you...meds, co-morbidities, etc. Let him know you need a referral to the baricatric registry and your doctor will not start the process. My daughter and myself got referred by him and have had our surgeries. We have lost 100 lbs and 75 lbs.  Dr Senior's sister had the surgery in the last year as well so he is compassionate to our plight.  Any of the doc in the clinic are more than approachable about this. Hope this helps to move your process along!!

I would suggest looking for a new doctor. Mine also isn't all happy about this route, he still thinks I can do it on my own but he was the one who suggested the surgery, as I wasn't even thinking about it at all, after he got my last blood results. He said, it can't go on like this, you are falling apart, here is the referral. And I know that he will see me through this holding my hand the whole time.
