car accident - no NSAIDS?!?!

i got hit from behind today ... taken to the hospital by two lovely paramedics.  thankfully, my 11 yr old came out unscathed.  however, my back is KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i advised the doctor of my VSG and he immediately acknowledged no NSAIDS.  he ended up telling me that there really wasn't anything else i could take that would be as efficient as an NSAID for my apparent muscular injury.  he said i could try my XSTyleonl (that can't even crack my average headaches) ... or he could give me T3's (but i advised him that i wanted to be cognizant of my surroundings).  

in a nut shell, i am now home, and my back is starting to hurt more and more.  i am beyond upset.  i am going to call the nurse navigators at TWH in the morning to see if they can suggest anything for me.  

i guess i shouldn't be questioning an emergency doctor, but is he for real when he said there is nothing else that he could give me?  

otherwise,  how bad can this pain get?  

You can have NSAIDS with a sleeve.  Not sure why the doctor would say you can't unless he is confusing it with RNY.

When I hurt myself a few months ago, the doctor gave me nothing as he said that Tylenol was all he would allow me as I didn't want narcotics.  If you don't want narcotics and since you turned down T3 I am guessing that you don't, then there really is only Tylenol and Advil and Advil is out for those of us with RNY.

oh lynn -- thank you for the confirmation.  i appreciated that.  it was just so hard for me to believe that there was nothing else to give me muscular relief.

shortly after getting my VSG, i invested in a jumbo bottle of tylenol XS.  i has been so disappointed in it -- it can't even break a minor headache!!  such a waste of money!  for some reason i thought that there must have been other meds i could take that would be as effective than an NSAID if ever i needed it.  i'm a bit surprised that there isn't.

yes, i don't want narcotics.  i can't tolerate them.  i have a child and i drive and being sedated is not my definition of pain management.  

Actually, I was told by Dr. Cyriac when I asked for a VSG instead of an RNY due to wanting to take NSAIDS for migraines that you shouldn't take NSAIDS with a VSG either.  Which surprised me since I kept hearing that was one reason why people were getting the VSG. 

However, I find that since surgery, the Tylenol-based stuff works well for pain, and I don't get migraines anymore anyhow.

Yikes, sorry you were in an accident! But glad to hear your son made it out alright.

You could maybe try Tylenol Muscle & Body, that might be a bit more effective than extra strength Tylenol but it's hard to say since everyone is different. You could try heat and ice on your back, taking a hot shower and letting the steam help loosen your muscles. Do you know if it's a muscle injury or something in your spine? If it's muscle try not to let it seize up by lying still too long. 

Otherwise I'd just call TWH in the morning and see what they say. Hope you find a solution!

i am going to call the pharmacy right now.  the pain is getting worse -- feels like my upper body is seizing up.  this is stupid.  was thinking of calling the house doctor but he won't be able to do much ... i really don't think many general physicians are versed on WLS and associated matters.

You're right, not many doctors know about WLS and what we can and can't have, especially when it comes to VSG vs RNY. Hopefully the pharmacy can help you out and you'll get some relief. Back pain is horrible, especially when you start to seize up. Hope you feel better soon!

Wow Sorry about your accident and hope the back pain is short lived. Have you read about applying hot and/or cold? I think maybe you should get some advise on this alternative to medications but one or the other (or both) might help?

Whether or not we can take NSAID's after VSG is something the surgeons seem to be conflicted on. My doctor said not to take them. I believe he said they are fine for us to take on rare occasions, but make sure to protect your stomach if you do take some and by that I mean to take it with food. The concern is in developing a stomach ulcer.  I'm so glad your child is fine. Take it easy. I hope you're feeling better soon and are able to find some relief for the pain.
