diet soda?

i went out to a social yesterday -- all they had to drink was diet sodas (no diet non-carbonated drinks) or water.  straigh****er makes me puke.  i didn't end up having anything.  it sucked.

i tried to look up info today on why we should not drink soda.  i think it had to do with carbonation stretching our stomachs.  is this correct?  what if we let it go flat before drinking it?

i never drank regular sodas anyway ... only diet.  i know that too is up for debate --

let me know what you folks do.  :)

In my orientation they mentioned that the stuff used to create carbonation leeches calcium from your bones and since we have a hard enough time absorbing our vitamins anyway we should steer clear... I have heard the streching tummy and it being painful to drink it with the gas and all..

My understanding was the carbonation too. I think it is counter productive - we are taking calcium and so why bother with something that will reduce the calcium we are working to replace. I am never sure if there will be something I would like to drink when I go places so I always bring my own drink..All the best.

First of all Diet Pop is just not good for you. The carbonation of the pop can make you very gassy and not be pleasant and I am not sure on it but it has been said it can stretch the stomach. I also believe it could trigger some bad habits from before. In 4 years I have not touch the stuff. Pop went with chips and all the bad stuff I use to eat. Why not just take your own water with something in it or take some crystal light with you and add it to the water. I have even taken my own sugar free juice with me. No one has ever question me. Most people think I am just very careful on what I put into me because I run.

I always make sure to carry mio or other water flavouring with me. You just never know when you will need it. I have a sip or so of diet coke and belch like crazy and the fizz goes in my nose, soooo very unpleasant!! It actually just goes to waste and I dump it down the drain, not worth it

Hey Sun,

I drank a little diet gingerale on rare occasions without growing a tail. :)

Surgery date is Oct. 17th, 2013 in Ottawa. I was referred to the clinic in September 2012. The person performing my surgery is Dr Amy Neville.

fantastic suggestions -- y'all are bang on.  i just finished mixing my usual 1 part cranberry juice 3 parts water with a ton of ice to drink -- so refreshing.  i guess i have to be prepared for things like that and make sure i have a hydration option suitable.

this was the first time i was in a social situation eating in a group situation.  there was nothing there i could eat -- except for some Vietnamese soup.  all i did was drink the broth (which was, actually, very delicious!!).  but had nothing to drink.  the person i was with kept on offering me one thing after the next, and i kept on saying no.  he gave me  a weird look after awhile.  i explained to him that i had stomach surgery a couple months ago and am still healing.  i don't think i need to tell people about my VSG.

i am beginning to realize that there really isn't very much out there for WLS clients to eat when we are not preparing our own foods and taking it with us.

maybe i should do a post on how to eat out.  i went to my usual italian hangout w/ my son -- normally i would eat their pasta or their grilled calamari.  now, i refuse to get back on the pasta bandwagon (bad addiction i don't want to get back on) and the calamari will be too hard on my tummy for sure.  chicken has to be moist for my tummy to tolerate it otherwise it will be a waste of money.  i don't eat sandwiches (bread) .  i did end up ordering their Quesadilla and begged the woman to cook the chicken as moist as possible.  it ended up being on an extremely thin and crispy bread and they cooked everything brilliantly.  of course,  i was only able to eat 1/10th of a section, but boy oh boy was it incredible!!  but in my opinion, that was just a lucky break for me to find that item on the menu to enjoy.

i did ask Santa for a bariatric cookbook but not sure if i will get it.  would be nice to get some pointers on safe eating out options too.

I beg to differ about the eating out thing... My hubby and I eat out more then cooking at home, it's just easier for the 2 of us.

Although Calamari seems to be enjoyed by many, that is one of the things I don't like. But I eat many other "fried" foods, depending on where we go. Each restaurant we go to regularly, I eat certain things. My hubby says that I am predictable, lol.

My dietician used to tell me ... " This is a lifestyle change, not a life sentence. You have to eat in moderation! Enjoy food. Eat to live NOT live to eat" I still hear those words everyday!

This past weekend, we went to my sisters to celebrate our christmas, I was totally expecting to have the usual turkey dinner. Boy, let me tell you... I was not ready for the dinner they made and was GREATLY disappointed to find out we were having spaghetti! I don't generally eat pasta!! Almost NEVER. I really have to be craving pasta to want to eat that. But, like any other outing, I made the best of it. I made it look like I ate more than I really did and pretended to like it. The sauce my bro-in-law made was really tasty tho!!

I remember the day I got out of the hospital for my RNY. we went out. The one little place in the town we lived had closed and did some renos, so we wanted to check it out. I had soup (and it was REALLY good). I didn't eat even half. We had even gone to Myrtle Beach when I was 5weeks out, The road trip was very experimental. I had nuts for the first time after a few months of not having them. We stopped at arby's, I got an arby's melt but could only eat the meat. At the restaurant in MB, I tried salad and it was ok. I had tried cheese quesadillas, they were ok too. We made our own breakfasts, lunches and some dinners.

Many people after wls choose to eat an appetizer or many people just split an entree, if they are going out.

The only thing that I couldn't really eat until I was about 6months out, was steak.

It was a learning process for my hubby and me. We have it down now! I order first and he waits to see what I get, then he can order differently cuz he KNOWS he will be eating mine too.

good question!

I do remember about the carbonation and how it can also aid in stretching your pouch with the air bubbles, but what about a "flat" soda? Like ginger ale?
