Hi all, i purchased my Optifast and am ready to go, in a two weeks i will begin my liquid portion of this journey.  I was speaking with someone who works for a bariatric clinic, she was telling me the statistics she sees with RNY long term, she has only seen one person keep the weight off for more that 4 years, most she states gain alot back and some even more weight than when they started. :S

I know it is all in the mindset and this is not a magical surgery, however does anyone know the statistics here in Ontario Canada for long term success with the RNY.  I see so many pictures of people on the Home page and also those that post here doing so amazingly well long term that i wondered if we can actually find out the real numbers?

Looking forward and downward :)

I have met quite a few people who have had long term 10+ year success - they don't stay at goal necessarily but definitely not up where they were when they started.

That has been my experience as well, i have a few friends that had the procedure and they are doing amazing.  My one friend had it in 2005 and she is at goal and still holding.

I googled this exact thing awhile back and read that at 10 years only 20% have "failed"...

Most of the statistics out there are usually for the US. Since up until a few years ago all bariatric surgeries were done there. They are currently starting to compile new ones. What they appear to have found so far that people who follow the program and use support groups or their bariatric team have the best success. I know at TWH they are offering more and more post surgery programs. They know if people can battle the eating demons they had pre surgery they will have success after.

Many of the people who had issues were done in the US and did not have the support we have now in Ontario.

Your success or failure is up to you. Use this as a tool not a solution. Finding out what pushes you to eat and finding ways to cope will help you a lot.

Good luck

Totally Agree, the battle is in the head the pouch is just tool!, i believe that is why we go to the meetings with the SW, RN AND RD to confront those demons and work on them as we prepare for this gift,  if you choose not to work on it now , it will remain until you choose to deal with it.  Nobody gets to become morbidly obese with healthy eating habits.
