Worried if my body can handle surgery/post op nausea

So I have been fighting to have this surgery for over 3 yrs, just waiting on final steps with Guelph (post op class/meet surgeon).  I have done my research and listening and learning from all the experiences on the forum.

Here's my problem:  for the past month I have been dealing with some kidney issues (blocked), have been hospitalized 3 times, had 2 emergency surgeries and one non surgical procedure while in hospital.  Just spent the last 3 days in again.

My problem is nausea.  I throw up really easy. I don't handle pain medicines well.  When I had back surgery a few years ago I had the entire pharmacy team working with me for a couple of weeks, to stop the vomiting.  With this kidney issue, I am in the few percentage of people that gets physically sick in addition to all the other issues.  It's so bad that  I can't even hold down water. (but it is eventually managed with iv nausea meds (zofran) and pain meds. I also seem to be someone that will get every weird or uncommon side effect.

Here's the concern:  My best friends' (they are like my family) have just voiced their concerns over me having WLS- their fears are that if  I get  sick after surgery, it will cause damage.  Initially I was afraid this kidney issue would hinder my chances of having my surgery, but the urologist said (depending on the biopsy results) that wls may actually help.  So, yeah for that. 

The nausea and vomiting worry me as well.  But I want this surgery more.

So here is the question:  Did any of you have any major nausea issues right after surgery?  was it managed?  I do realize that there can be issues further out as well......

I just had my appointment with the anesthetist, I was concerned because I am prone to motion sickness... he said not to worry he noted it and said that he gives us 3 kinds of anti - nausea medications.

Thanks Michelle...I know in my second kidney surgery the anesthesiologist gave me extra stuff, and I was okay until I came home..I had hoped that due to the nature of our surgery they would try and take extra precautions so we wouldnt be sick.

You must be getting excited-- just a few more days for you to go!  I am so excited for you!

I do not Handel pain meds well so starting right after surgery in recovery I refused the pain meds, got myself in trouble by taking nothing but the regular Tylenol did work if I took it every four hours.  I had no vomiting issues after rny

Thanks Jane.  It seems they like to give percocet after surgery, and that is one drug that makes me really ill, so i was already prepared to refuse it if that was their drug of choice.  With this kidney issue I have been on dilaudid which is extremely strong, but when taken with zofran (chemotherapy anti nausea drug)..it wasn't too bad.

I think the pain part I can try and handle (after dealing with this kidney pain), its the vomiting that worries me-afraid it will damage my new pouch...

From what I understand most stomach surgeries cause nausea.   I woke up heaving and it didn't damage anything. Of course promptly they gave me drugs, stopped it right away.   I'm sure if the surgeon knows what it took 3 weeks for other doctors to figure out, they'll use that.    No worries, it'll be okay :)

I tend to experience a lot of nausea and vomiting post-op. When I woke up from the RNY, I was ok in the recovery room, but as soon as they took me to my room and tried to get me up to go to the bathroom, the dry heaves started. It lasted a few hours and although I never actually vomited - I was told that my little pouch was so small and empty that I'd have nothing to throw up anyway - it was understandably painful. I was afraid that the severity of the dry heaves would do some damage but other than being very uncomfortable (and accidentally peeing at one point!) I was fine once it passed. I'm not sure what they were giving me for nausea but I know they tried a few different meds. It wasn't fun, but it was only temporary at least! I get nauseous easily.... Seems to be my thing.

 I hear you on the nausea thing,  I too get it quite easily, as you can tell from my post.

Thank you for your reply.  It makes me feel better knowing that even though you heaved, no damage was done, and that it was temporary. It gives me hope that things will be okay for me.

Zofran is the only one that works for me.  I also get very pukey whenever they put me under.
