Hi everyone. Just wondering what kind of foods and things in general i should buy for post-op. I'm through the Guelph center and I've noticed a lot of people here take protein shakes soon after surgery. The guidelines from my center doesn't 'have protein shakes as part of their meal plans at all. It's clear liquids for the first 7 days. Full liquids for the next 3 weeks and the soft/regular food there after. Is this something I should ask the center if i need too?

thanks

Guelph doesn't recommend that we use protein shakes they want us to get our protein from food not supplements.  That is why you don't see them listed in the food lists.

No protein shakes ..You need to buy....sugar free jellos and puddings and broths and water bottle and tylenol ( for some) food scale, measuring cups, low cal blueberry or cranberry juices

Really?! No protein shakes? At 4.5 months out I STILL cant get in nearly enough protein without them.. dont buy too much of anything... your taste buds change post op and there are things you won't like anymore post op... I lived 2 weeks on SF freezies and protein shakes...

I know right. Seems a lot easier just to have a protein shake when you're in a rush.

The protein shakes vs protein powder smoothies is a debate, TWH used to provide a basic recipe for smoothies (can't say if they still do).  But after a few months they want you getting your protein primarily from whole foods, not protein powders nor pre made shakes.

Recommend you not stock up too much on anything until after surgery, as you may find your tastes change.  Mine changed a lot, can not stand sugary things now (used to be able to clean out a fresh box of fudge eo's) but love salt (never had an affinity for it pre rny).  Just my opinion.

The kitchen scale, a good blender, measuring spoons and cups, an unflavored protein powder you like and the required supplements are all things you should have.

Good luck, enjoy the ride!

Strainers, smaller bowls, plates and eating utensils, a few water bottles, blender bottle, magic bullet, if you work containers to transport your lunches to and from wor**** cube trays extras for freezing puréed or broths in. Baggies, Minnie muffin tins for making egg bites in.  I bought wellness liquid calcium, chewable vitamins, Tylenol .  Sugar free jello, and pudding, sugar free apple sauce, skim or one percent milk, herb teas that you like,  and like others wrote measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale, some things to deal with constipation should that occur

i bought anything food wise that I was allowed to eat the first week..we didn't have clear fluids for a week, just in the hospital..so I had milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, soups, jello, cream of wheat, oat bran, applesauce and protein shakes..and of course all of my vitamins (though I know that is also different in Guelph). After about a week I was feeling well enough to enter society without getting any strange looks, and bought anything else I required for my next few weeks.
