New to OH
Hi everyone. New to the forum . I'm out f Kitchener and will be having surgery at Guelph 24 October 2013 and boy am i getting ever so nervous. I was excited initially but since I'm getting closer to the date, I'm feeling nervous (it doesn't help knowing the date 2 months in advance either). This is my first surgery ever
. What happens when you register that day up until they knock you out? IV, Catheter? if so how long are they in. Also when you wake and till you leave. I'm not scared but, questioning whether I will be able to do the whole weight loss journey. Then again, I thought i could never give up cakes, cookies and candy and yet i did. I guess if you go in with a positive mind, everything will be fine but, i can't help being nervous.
Hi New_Me,
Welcome to the OH forum. You'll do great and be on that bench before you know it! You can do it! It's totally normal to be worried about the operation and a bit worried about being able to handle all the lifestyle/diet changes after the surgery, but they are 110% worth it.
I was also pretty apprehensive about the surgery, even though I'd have 4 others before. I went to TEGH for my operation, but I did write a pretty thorough account of what happened from the time I arrived at the hospital until after I'd gotten home (it's not too long...) - http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/ON/4612953/My-Surgery-Went -Really-Well/page,1/action,replies/topic_id,4612953/
At the TEGH, there's a policy to use Foley catheters as little as possible, so I didn't get one. If you do get one, they wait until you're asleep to put it in, at least in all my other operations they did. The IV is put in when you get ready for surgery and put on your gowns and anti-embolism stockings, it stays in you until you leave the hospital because they will need to keep you hydrated, as well as give you meds. The day I came home, I lost 4 lbs of the fluids they pumped into me. The nurse who inserted my IV was very good and got it in on the first try and it didn't even hurt.
Good luck!
Jenn. :)
That was my experience, I hope that helps ease your mind
Bill
Welcome to OH!
By the way, you're normal. Everyone gets nervous around this time. Wether you have had 20 surgeries (I was on surgery #5 or so at the time) or none.
As for the catheter, it's out not long after you are in your room, unless you have an issue. IV goes in during surgery prep. They will give you fluids to keep you hydrated, and they also use it to give you any meds that you need by needle (saves extra pokes, and it's more consistent than poking).
You will do fine with this journey!
