Who gives you the "goal weight"? No one gave me a expected WL number.

Dr Hagan gave me a goal of 140 lbs as my finishing weight. He did some calculations and told me that 140 would put me at an 80% loss of excess weight and a healthy BMI.

When I met the dietitian at TWH, she asked what number I had in mind.

I told her that I didn't have a number, that getting healthy was key. If that looked like 150 or 190 or 220 then it didn't matter.

She was happy I didn't have some unrealistic goal.

basically take the amount of weight that you need to lose to get to a "normal" bmi and then calculate what 80% of that is - and basically that is your goal weight for the surgery to be considered successful - might not be your ideal weight but that is what the surgical goal is

The social worker at Toronto Western asked what weight I was hoping for in the end. I told him and he said that it was a bit low and I may not achieve that. He then told me about the 80% of the excess weight . And the total I would most likely reach. It was a little disappointing at first, but it was nice to know that  if I didn't reach MY goal I wouldn't be a failure. I have now decided I just want to be within a normal BMI.

Its all up to you really. You may find you look and feel good at 190 as opposed to 160. Everyone carries their weight different.

I went through Guelph as well. The nurse told me that they determine your goal weight by when you will have a BMI of 30. She asked me how I felt about my goal weight of 167 and I told her that I thought it was too high. She said according to the OHIP guidelines , they had to assign a goal weight which matched a BMI of 30 but there was nothing preventing me from losing more weight.

I asked the dietitian in Kingston and she gave me the weight range to be considered a success. I picked my own goal weight at a realistic goal which I will re-evaluate as I get closer. I just want to be at a weight that feels comfortable and healthy.
