Who gives you the "goal weight"? No one gave me a expected WL number.

Morning all,

Little over two months from today i will be having surgery, only remaining appointment is next month for my PATTS.

I hear or in this case read alot about people given a expected Goal weight, the doctors expected acceptable weight loss as well as the patients personal goals.

Thing is I'm nearing the surgery date and i have never  been given a 'goal"  all the health care professionals have been amazing but no one from the NP to the surgeon has ever given me a number to expect or a goal to strive for. Is this common?

I stand 5 '8 and as of this morning tip the scales at 272, I know in my head I would love to be 160-170 but it strikes me a little odd that no one has discussed what they consider a successful weight,

How did you discover your "goal weight"

Nobody has given me a goal weight.  They told me at TWH that they don't focus on the numbers for goals and that it's up to me to decide what my goals are, whether weight or otherwise.

I was not given a goal weight. It was suggested that with the surgery should you should lose 80% of your excess weight. They consider that a success. I think many people set a goal weight for themselves. In my case I have actually gone below the weight I set which amazed me!

I discussed it with my surgeon at one month follow up. Started with similar height and stats as you have and decided on 165 to 160 range as my goal. Also based on the fact I am no spring chicken anymore (57) and will see how that looks on me. Haven't been that low since my teens!

I wasn't given a goal weight either. I was just told 60-80% of my excess body weight I would expect to loose. So I just went off what my BMI should be and added a little cause I'm probably not going to get to my "normal" BMI!!

No goal weight given, same as the others have said, they are more focused on how you feel and if you can do what you want to do. I did see on my chart at my last appointment that they had down 160-200 lbs as some sort of marker for me. Maybe that is what I will weigh if I lose between 50-80% of my excess weight? I didn't ask about it, lol. I am hoping for between 150-180 lbs myself.

Im going through Guelph and my nurse (first meeting)  is the one who discussed what my goal weight was and the clinics.... the clinic states that if im under 200 then that's awesome (wow underwhelming much!) but my nurse winked at me and said "Doesn't mean your goal cant be much lower"
