Hi I'm having my surgery Aug 29th at TEGH and was wondering roughly people paid for meds when they were discharged from the hospital.

Thanks Heidi

My Meds were only my Prevacid .. I was not given a script for pain Meds  or for heparin ... I was told to take OTC stool softeners

I am in Guelph but I think a lot depends on pre existing health conditions

I'm already of Preacid so I should be good then.

I got a prescription for Prevacid and oxycodone, but I only ever filled the Prevacid. I took an OTC stool softener, which was less than $10.

I was really surprised at how expensive Prevacid is. My drug plan won't cover it because there is an available generic but I am taking the brand name.

I know even with the 80% coverage on my plan it's still $30 for the prevacid.

Um... If you are having coverage issues... Typically most plans have to cover the brand name if the Dr writes "No Substitutions" on the script. Might be worth checking...

I called around and Costco's Prevacid is about $200.00 cheaper over 6 months---Pharmasave was still cheaper but Costco was the best...I figure I will have only two weeks filled and fill the rest locally

I was discharged on a Sunday from HRRH and I had to go to an off-site pharmacy for the low molecular weight heparin (I can't remember what it was called) injectable. Almost $200.
It wasn't covered by my plan so I said forget it.

I got Prevacid (worth it) but I didn't have to pay anything.  Lanzoprazole is the generic (or and -prazole).  Generics are just as good.  Ranitidine 75 mg I've taken OTC and is good too.

After the first week I only take the prevacid when I think I need it, so my Rx is lasting a long time.

I also got Oxycodone, but I've only used 2 pills of the oxycodone. I split them into quarters and either a quarter or 2 quarters in a day was all I needed, then after a week no need at all.

Prevacid doesn't work on an 'as needed' basis, it's not an antacid like Tums, you have to take it everyday. A PPI like Prevacid is the only thing that is effective at preventing ulcers for RNY post-ops. You are taking a huge risk by not taking it everyday as directed.

The bigger risk here ( IMO) was the decision to NOT fill the prescription for heparin post-op....very foolish....especially from a nurse who should know better
