I have to go for my pre op testing on July 30th and have a few hours to kill before I fly back home, (just flying in and out the same day), what is there to do in the near by area to kill the time?

Thanks,
Heidi

You'll be in my neighbourhood!  (I'm about a 10 minute walk from TEGH.)  But I'll be at work, or I'd suggest we go have a coffee or something. :)

I guess I can't recommend all the great restaurants in the area - we have a number of really great places in this neighbourhood!  :)  Too bad it's a Monday - on Tuesdays, there is an apparently great Farmer's Market across the street from the hospital at the East York Civic Centre.  I've never been to it because it's held during the day while I'm at work.

If you take a walk around the neighbourhood, you'll find a couple of parks, but the hospital is basically in the middle of a residential neighbourhood so it's not the most exciting place in the world!  Although there are some pretty houses on the side streets with nice gardens if you just wanted to take a walk.

If you walk south to Danforth, there are stores and restaurants and stuff like that, but I can't think of any stores that are overly exciting in the Coxwell area of the Danforth.  But it still might be an interesting walk.  It will take you about 10 minutes to get to the Danforth walking from the hospital.

The more interesting stretch of the Danforth is further west.  So if you walk down to Coxwell and Danforth, you could get on the subway at Coxwell station, go west a few stops to Chester station, and then go to 10,000 Villages, the Carrot Common (which has lots of neat stores in it), and lots of other little boutiques and trinket shops right in the heart of Greektown.

If you're up for a long walk, you could just walk along the Danforth from Coxwell going west, and you'll see some interesting stores along the way.  It would probably take about an hour to walk from Coxwell to Broadview (with no stops on the way - but you might want to stop here and there to browse or sit down or grab a drink), and you'll go from one end of Greektown to the other that way.

There's also Little India, which starts at the corner of Coxwell and Gerrard Street, and goes east on Gerrard until you get to Greenwood.  That's a neat stretch, lots of interesting shops and such.  To get to Coxwell and Gerrard, you can either walk south on Coxwell (the street the hospital's on****il you get to Gerrard.  It's a bit of a trek, probably a half hour walk.  Or you can walk 10 minutes to the subway at Coxwell and Danforth, catch the 22 Coxwell South bus and get off at Gerrard.

Anyhow, these are just a few thoughts - maybe others have other ideas as well!

Onward, thank you so much for all the great ideas and directions even. I'm going to print it out. We love walking when we're down in Toronto. I'm sure we will end up walking to Greektown and Little India. Just incase, how much is the Subway?

You might want to head down to the Beach which is about an hour walk from TEGH.  You can take the  Coxwell 22 bus down to Queen and either walk or take the Queen streetcar east and they have tons of shops and you can walk down to the beach from there too.  The transit is $3 but you could buy a day pass which might be better for you it's $10.50 pre person  and you can use it all day and might be a good option for you because you have to get to and from the hospital anyway and if you just go to the island to the hospital you will need to pay 2 fares anyway and that is $6 dollars.   Hope everything goes well ....Jenn

Glad to help, Heidi. :)  Any other questions, feel free to ask!  I see someone already answered your question about transit fare - yes, a day pass would probably be much less complicated and likely cheaper too, depending on how many times you hop on and off the streetcar/bus/subway.

Thank you for response and explain that the passes are good for all forms of transportation, I never knew that or about the passes. Wish we knew that months ago it would have saved us lots of money. Have a great weekend,
Heidi
