 Evening all,

New to the site but thankfull to have found it. I've made the choice to seek out WLS, after a year of soulsearching and the better part of 20 years struggling with my weight. I'm now at my highest 254lbs on a 5"7 frame. A BMI of 39.6 with untreated HBP and awating the results of my sleep study ,will know on June 26 12 if I indeed have Sleep Aphena , all signs and general Gp/MO point to yes.
I'm terribled my BMI of 39.6 is a fraction to low to be covered. I'm a regular force member of the Military posted here at CFB Kingston.

I'm wodering if anyone in the Kingston area has had the surgery or is currently waiting. ..I have a ton of questions and the more I read the more excited i get.

What is the expected time frame from referall to operating room? Anyone know if the DND/CF health care process is quicker/slower then OHIP? I'm not a member of OHIP being a regular force member of the CF.

Does the fact that Kingston has a Regional Assessment and Treatment Centres  (RATC): speed up the process or slow it down?

Anyone being in my shoes my current BMI is 39.6 and not 40 BMI? Is this a road block , hate the idea of gaining wait only to have to the tool to lose it.

Any help/advice would be amazing.

Cheers and thanks for reading my posts!

Welcome to the forum.  I'm not sure what the impacts are for you with regard to OHIP. My understanding was that all military is covered through reciprocal arrangements. I suspect that the border line BMI won't be an issue since you have comorbidities as well.  I had my surgery through Ottawa prior to the RATC opening so I don't know the impact it will have on the intake process; but it really shouldn't delay the process.

Not sure if you are interested or not but we have a Kingston meeting scheduled for this Tuesday night with a guest speaker, a dietican from the RATC is joining us.  We meet the second Tuesday of the month at the Ogwanada Resource Centre on Portsmouth Avenue at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome.

This is a wonderful forum and I'm sure that you will find lots of useful information here.  Al the best.

Hi Armyguy1976,

Welcome to the board:) I am going thru the process now, I was originally  scheduled to go thru Ottawa but switched to Toronto Western. My application went in December 2011 and my appointments have been fairly steady. I still have 2 appoinments left and then hopefully a surgery date in Sept.

I live in Kingston, and attend the meetings Muriel mentioned above. Its a great group of people who will encourage and motivate you. They will answer all your questions and are very supportive.
During my interview with the social worker he suggested I join a support group, told him I already had and this worked in my favour. It showed him I was serious about going on this journey and that I was seeking out info on my own.

Come on out and join us on Tuesday night!

Karrie

first off thanks for the quick reply and more importantly the support. I've been ashamed of my weight and in turn myself for years , i exercise regularly, 5 days a week for 45min-hour, I've gave up pop, choc etc and am a non smoker and non drinker but i can;t seem to control my weight gain .

I will try my best to make the upcoming meeting, is there a large amount of people that attend, I'm currently struggling with anxiety being around large groups of people, yet another side affect how I believe the world See's overweight people,

Thanks again for your time, and I already feel better about joining such a wonderful site.

Hey army guy, I'm 10 months post op, and while not in the cf, I'm with psp at 22 wing in North Bay.  Pretty sure the. Process needs to start at the mid, where they will probably. Assign you to remedial pt with a pes. Specialist.  I know of a couple of cf members that have had the process done.but certainly the place to start is the mir

You could  try eating salty snacks and drinking a lot of water just the night before they take your actual weight officially. It might push you past the 40 bmi without being actually permanent weight gain.

Afternoon all, let me start by saying the support and knowledge I've found on this site is amazing, for the first time in my adult life i feel like there is hope for my weight and maybe if I use this as a tool and 110% on board with the lifestyle change I can get back to feeling more like the old me.

I've tried everything these past 10 years from multiple diets , cold turkey eliminating sweets, to weigh****chers to hypnotizing to get to a health weight , in the military I'm well versed in excising 5 times and week and have no doubt i have the discipline to make the positive changes in my life to make WLS work .  I have even gone so far as asking my doctor to place me on 5 day a week supervised gym program in 2011 with no results, for those familiar with the military lifestyle this request was met with great embarrassment by my peers, this program is usually prescribed for those that don't meet the physical fitness requirements while I always do yearly its a struggle.

I'm terrified my results for my sleep study i get back on June 26th wont show sleep apnea, as my other comorbs are boarder line HBP  and blood sugar, I'm currently at 39.8 BMI according to bathroom scale and tape measured height.

I can't thank you enough for your time, advice and support. Looking forward to meeting some of you at support group meeting tomorrow.

Cheers
Kb
