A little confused--Don't yell at me LOL

At HRRH my first dietitian was pretty militant about the caffeine and pop.  I am 4 months out and I now have some pop once or twice a week.  I buy those teensy cans of Coke zero and I don't usually finish the can.  I find that the carbonation feels different now and I'm not fond of the feeling.  But if I go out I get a diet pop because the no alcohol is driving me bananas and drinking a bottle of water will just make me angry, so pop is my concesssion, lol.

I also drink mostley decaff, but occ have some caffeine.  Apparently, part of the reason for not taking in caffeine is that it leeches the calcium out of your diet, so kind of a waste to take all this calcium if I'm taking in caffeine.  I do find that coffee (caff or decaff) irritates my stomach, but I have a high acidity level despite the daily Prevacid HRRH puts you on and I may have to be scoped for an ulcer.

I went through Humber and was told no pop or carbonated beverages because they'd cause pain. The dietician mentioned people thinking their pouch would stretch but she said it wouldn't be likely to happen from pop.

Caffeine was also something to be avoided because of the ulcer issue. But i was given the okay to drink regular coffee. I only have 1 cup a day, if that.

i wonder if the thought process has changed a bit from say 6 - 8 years ago to now... 6-8 years ago they were more realistic with the restrictions.... but how many have taken the advice of.. its ok to have a lil of this and a lil of that and transformed it into a 12 pk of coke zero a day cause it never hurt before... then some of the other lil bits here and there crept back and whammo you have some who failed the surgery bringing success rates down and you can see the cascade affect....

now that ohip is funding the surgeries within ontario they want to make it as successful as they can and well we know where the lil bits scenario got some.. so now lets say NO! yo cant ever have it or you will blow up lile a balloon and die (ok I know an over exaggeration) but its the same as the lil bit... some take the advise and run with it till everything is so restrictive that it almost seems unreal.

I am pre op and I have given up caffeine totally but its for the better... I find i am having fewer migraines and when I do get a migraine its taking less and less medication to bring it under control... I do like my ginger ale... but I am an odd ball.... I like it flat to begin with.... so I am not worried about bubbles...lol

caffeine can increase your risk for ulcers. I drink about two cups a day, i've never had an ulcer before, and think i'm generally pretty low risk, so... its my only bad habit!!

No research has shown that coffee drinking leads to the formation of gastric ulcers. Even if a person is diagnosed with an ulcer, there is no reason to stop drinking coffee unless there are specific symptoms associated with its consumption.

While some people may experience heartburn after drinking a cup of coffee, there is no conclusive evidence that coffee makes the stomach produce more acid. However, caffeine may decrease the strength of the muscle that surrounds the esophagus as it enters the stomach. This may allow more acid to flow up into the esophagus causing heartburn.

It is confusing and ever changing.  Hamilton, my clinic said no to soda ever and no to caffeine pre surg and I think for at least 3 months after.  I would have to check my book on that.

I have had some regular tea 3 months out but it makes my tummy rumble so if I make a big mug I will do half and half. I like a little caffeine, what can I say.  I still do decaff coffee and no soda to date.  I have had caffeine in a piece of chocolate too.

I refuse to answer as I do not want to be accused of cyber bullying lol

Two years out I drink one leaded coffee and at least two tea a day.  I also drink coke zero (maybe oncea week) but I shake the bubbles out as the carbonation bloats me

I asked at TWH about coffee as it's my only vice. They said coffee was fine.

Oddly enough, I haven't craved it since my RNY

Was told no coffee for 6 months at least, I caved at 3 months and have a daily home ground/brewed coffee with 1% True Taste for breakfast...maybe another mid-morning...hasn't hurt me.

Was told no carbonation ( I was in the "carbonation will stretch your pouch" era)..and only had diet coke occasionally as a pre-dinner drink prior to WLS anyway and no other pop, so gave that up post WLS and drink a  glass of red wine instead. whenever possible, sometime daily,  makes me feel happier. than diet coke ever did...

Re carbonated drinks, I have maybe had two to three beers a year on really hot days since WLS...(a waste as comes out almost immediately same colour but warmed up and with less carbonation ...where o where do the bubbles go???)

Always loved champagne before WLS, so now drink it (or good sparkling wine) as often as I can...and am still enjoying life as a result...and maybe because of that am still alive and feeling good about my WLS...or hey, maybe that should be  other way round?...Anyway, still happy either way!

Upshot of it all is I drink coffee daily, have a beer maybe 2-3 times a year, and red and/or sparkling wine more often...feel fine and am NORMAL thanks to my WLS....and dont think I have stretched or damaged my pouch....
