A little confused--Don't yell at me LOL

HI all

I have been reading about people stressing about giving up pop, tea and coffee with caffeine.

I understand the pop thing. We shouldn't drink any pop, for a few reasons, and apparently diet pop is not good for anyone to drink regardless of their weight issues.

Of course caffeine is not good and we shouldn't have "too much" of it, but are people now having wls being told to give it up completely?

I know many people who have had weight loss surgery who drink coffee and tea. I drink one cup, maybe two of tea daily.
I know many people too who put cream in their coffee even after wls, just limit it

I am not knocking anyone for giving up caffeine, great if you can do it. I'm just wondering if people are now being told to give it up. When I had surgery 6 1/2 years ago I was told that I couldn't have pop for 6 months after surgery and that tea and coffee with caffeine should be limited and that for every cup of caffeine we should have an extra glass of water.

Just putting this out there cause I was wondering.
I admire anyone who can give up all these things, it certainly makes for a much healthier body

Have a great day all

I had orientation last week and we were told we had to give up caffeine 2 months prior to surgery and for 6 months after surgery then we can drink it again if we want to.  We were told we had to give up carbonated beverages forever if we had RNY. They didn't specify if we would if they did a VSG.

And I was told about 18 months ago at HRRH that I would have to give up pop forever and caffeine forever as well.

(Not that I've stuck to it ... caffeine has crept back into my diet, but only "half-caff" drinks at Starbucks etc.)

Still off pop though - that's EVIL stuff.

HI there

Yep pop is EVIL that is for sure. I am working on some things (for my health) and that will be one of them

Depends on the centre they're going to.  I believe TWH doesn't have a no caffeine "rule", but all of the others do.

When I had surgery 6 years ago there was no limit on my caffeine intake at all.  I was told not to drink pop due to the carbonation (and the **gasp** fear that it would stretch my pouch, which is f'ing impossible to do with pop, by the way), not to use a straw... .you know, all the old stand-bys. I'm still alive and kickin' and apparently so are you. lol

Hi Karen

Yep, still alive and kicking
I did not use a straw or drink pop for the first 6 months after surgery. I drink pop a few times a week

I didn't use a straw for a loooooong time, but I do now with my protein shakes. Just easier to drink them straight out of the tetra pack instead of pouring into a glass. lol

I don't really drink pop - extremely rare occurrence - but I have.  And I do drink beer, which is also carbonated.  I get irritated with the "OMG, no carbonation ever or you'll stretch your pouch and stoma and wreck your surgery!" myth.  That's right, I said it.  MYTH.

Your pouch and stoma are like a funnel - liquids flow through a funnel.  Liquids flow through your pouch and stoma.  Duh.  lol

I hear that all the time about stretching the pouch. NO way. I can attest to that :)

I was never told to give up caffeine.  I drink about 5 or 6 cups of tea per day.  I don't drink coffee because I don't like coffee.  I also drink diet coke.  Not all the time like I used to.  But I might have a glass in the evening once in awhile...or if I go out for lunch I will have a glass before I eat lunch.  Occasionally on weekends or if I am out I drink alcohol.  My drink of choice is rye and I mix it with diet coke.  My surgeon and dietician had strict rules about certain, important things but they also felt that for other things that moderation was the key as we are trying to live as normal a life as possible in the "real world" after surgery and that too much limitation will ultimately lead to failure.
