Oh My Knees!!!

I find it so hard to understand why when I was over 300 pounds my knees were fine, but now that I'm almost half that my knees are killing me :(  I always had issues with my lower back, hips and feet.. but my knees were fine. In the past month the pain is really really bad at times.  I know it may be because I'm working out, and walking so much but I thought that should help me feel better not make it worse!  Hopefully it will work itself out!  I'm so happy to be back working out, I hate that my knees are slowing me down.. especially with Zumba... but I will work through the pain!!!  Here is a picture that a friend sent me, and anyone who has done Zumba can identify with this !!!

When I was at Curves this morning I ran into my Grade School bus driver.  You know how there are those people that you meet that just really leave an impression on you?  She was one of those people.  She would drive us from Mount Albert to Stouffville Christian School and back everyday for years... 45 minutes each way.  I used to have severe bus sickness on a weekly basis, and she never got mad!  She would give us pizza parties on the bus for Christmas and Easter etc, and would play music.  She had a lot of patience that's for sure! It was really nice to have the chance, 20 years later how much I appreciated her and how she was my favorite bus driver!

For years and years I have wanted to learn how to knit and crochet.  I finally decided it was time after a lady from my support group was posting pictures of the things that she was making.  So my son and I went to Michaels and bought yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and paint by numbers. I looked it up on Youtube how to crochet and it was much easier than I thought it would be!  (at least the beginner stuff lol)

I have also found that it is a great distraction!  Lately, I have been guilty of mindless snacking in the evenings.  I am so good all day long but when I get home from work I want to snack (not on bad things but just on food in general)  I know I'm not hungry at all.. its just old habits strung from boredom.  But if I keep my hands and mind busy, that doesn't happen!  So crocheting, knitting and painting seem to be working.  Its good to have a hobby!!! Its also made the kids interested so its fun that we can do it together.

I posted some pictures of my progress, and I cant believe how many of my friends are into knitting etc!  I guess we are the next generation of the sewing circle!  I suggested we should start up a knitting club.. who knows ;)

I'll bet your knees are sore since you have lost weight because the weight is now distributed properly and has changed the re alignment of your back. Gret work on the weight loss! You live in Newmarket eh? I'm in Burlington Noce to meet you. :) I have all sorts of wool that I was going to give away. Mymom died and I have so much I just couldnt throw it out. If you want it , you can have it. :)
Let me know. :)

Hey Lucy, if you don't have anyone asking for your wool (I would if I had time to do anything with it), you could always go to a local retirement home.  Sometimes they have knitting/crocheting circles there that make stuff to donate out (some do mitts, some do baby stuff for hospitals).  Just a thought.

I, too am a zumba fan! I love the pic!! It is sooooo true!!! lol
As far as your knees go, why not throw in another suppliment and take glucosamine
& chondroitin? I have been taking them for a while.
Best of luck!!

Re the knees,
I too found my knees were painful, but it seems to have passed now that i'm at goal.
I was also very clumsy, didn't have my usual groove, well I got that back too.

the mindless snacking at night, yup and double yup, it's the hardest part of my day.
taking up a hobby is the best way to deal with it. I've just started back into reading again and that keeps me away from the TV.

congrats on recognizing that, that's half the battle.

Good on for learning to crochet, that's cool.

Keep it up

J

Zumba is hard on the knees, i've heard. The side to side movements are difficult to manouevre. You may need orthotics. If your knees are hurting too much, why not lay off the zumba, and try for some easier movements.

I was going to say, just like Monica, that you might need orthotics now that your weight is different and likely distributed differently. They make a world of difference.! good luck

I was getting a lot of pain in my knees and I thought it was osteoarthritis because of my weight.  I always stayed away from lunges and stairs to protect them (well and I also hated then). After I lost most of my weight and was working out they were bothering me even more and I was freaking out.

Well it turns out my muscles around my knees were just weak. My chiropractor, massage therapist and Personal Trainer said I just needed to build up the muscles around my knees to help with stability and strength. The pain was because the muscles were weak and shortened. Too much sitting!

Walking on an incline on the treadmill, weight training and spinning all helped me. After lots of work and stretching the knee problems are pretty much gone. Yeah!

Good luck!

As a knitting geek I can tell you it gets addictive. I just finished an awesome snake scarf for my nephew that I am dying to give him tomorrow for his birthday.
