Fun with Reactive hypoglycemia

I'm usually so good with my RH but tonight it got me. Thought i would share my huposture in our support group:

Just a cautionary tale to share tonight. Fun with reactive hypoglycemia. Shortly after arriving home from dinner at my mom's Dawn became a bit irritable. We were moving furniture out of the living room and I figured it was just a "husband-wife" moment. Next minute she's falling into my arms whereupon I sat her carefully on the floor, but she was unable to even hold herself up or keep her head up, perspiring wildly, on the edge of consciousness. From moving furniture to syncope in a matter of 30 seconds. I called 911 and she was able to get her wits about her a minute later and she consumed some white grape juice which had a quick positive effect, pushing her sugar up to 4.8. Of course after you call an ambulance you can't cancel it, but the attendants were totally cool about the situation and validated that I was taking the correct course of action by calling when the period of syncope occurred.

Wow that is crazy, so glad you were ok and you were in the company of your DH at the time.  Scary how quickly it can come on, I had no idea it was that immediate.  Thanks for posting and letting us know!!

Hi Dawn,

I read your account with great interest.  I've just discovered that I have RH and now I'm busy testing, testing, testing my blood sugars to see if I can figure out my triggers.  I've gone as low as 1.8 which was pretty scary but your story really gives me pause. I don't know if I get irritable but can relate to the weakness and perspiration.  I live alone and don't have anyone to catch me if I fall so I'll really have to be careful with what I eat.  Have you figured out what brought on your latest RH episode?

Yes I had pudding with cool whip for dessert at my MILs over for dinner.

I'm usually pretty good at taking something to counteract the sugar spike but we got busy with moving furniture ( getting our wood floors done today) and I put it off longer than I should have.    Plus the fact that I was doing that may have spiked it even more.  I st down and had grape juice - major swigs and by the time hubby tested me it was up to 4.8.

Ive been as low as 1.1.  I'm curious to know what my reading was.    Like I said I think the physical exertion made it worse.

Holy, glad you are ok.

I had something similar happen to me twice while at an exercise class. My girlfriend thought I was just wimping out. But I had ZERO energy all of a sudden, figured out what happened after I got home. Keep sometihing sweet in my purse just in case. now when i eat sweets i always make sure i have a bit of protein after it.

Scary stuff eh?

You've tested at 1.8?? And you still had your wits about you? OMG my lowest was 2.8 and I was shaking, dizzy and talking stupid. I would have thought you would pass out by 1.8?? Although, I guess everyone is different. I know my sugars are low when I can't concentrate. I have to eat every two hours...but it's hard to keep up with.

That must have been scary, Dawn!  Glad that you know what to do to counteract it and hubby was there for you.  I hate to ask, but if he wasn't, would you have been able to get to the juice or what would you have done?
