Eat whatever colour you want!

You're on liquids for 48 hours prior to the surgery anyways...

Hi there

Really no question is a dumb question. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

I didn't do Optifast, but I am pretty sure you can use any sugar free jello. I think your idea is awesome though.

Take care

Hiya,

I am in Ottawa, and there were no restrictions on colour of sf jello during Optifast.  Have fun!

The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.

Any colour jello is fine. I think the red and yellow probably affect the scope somehow.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have heard in the past that the reason to avoid red and orange jello, cyrstal lite etc. is that the colouring makes it harder to see any blood or redness etc during a scope and by extension, I would presume it could also apply during surgery.  It may not necessarily be a problem, but if it is easy to avoid red jello and it gives even a small chance of making it easier to detect a problem, why not go with green jello and a few red maraschino cherries which you can pick off?

I'd have to disagree, Sher1ock. You're NPO the night before surgery, and the risk of jello hanging around in there is soooo slight, i can't see it making a difference. If there were some risk of that, someone would have said something to the contrary, or there would be some record of it in the documents we're given.
SUre, if you want to take a super abundance of caution, then yes, avoid red jello, but then you'd best avoid any red crystal light too, which is also not mentioned by anyone, anywhere.

Like I said at the outset, I don't know the answer and don't pretend to be an expert.   I'm sure you are right.  I was thinking more about it and realized that I heard the issue of no red liquids in the context of preparing for a colonoscopy and not part of the WLS process.  Maybe it's more of an issue with respect to that procedure, but either way, risk is minimal.

Even some scopes they don't care about color any longer.  I just had a colonoscopy in early November and of course the list just said jello so I asked about red and she said oh we don't worry about that any longer.  I was shocked as just 6 months before when my mom had one red was still taboo.
