Optifast effects or metformin?

I have just completed my 3rd day on optifast and for the most part doing pretty good...not really hungry....it's just weird not chewing anything. I am also type II diabetic just taking metformin while on optifast. When i first started metformin years ago everything just went right thru me....i have been having the same thing happen for the last 3 days...anyone know if this is a side effect of Optifast or related to being on metformin and not consuming any solids.

Hard to say which it is because you're taking both and can't stop either of them to experiment. It is common though for people to go through a stage of opti-trots. How is your blood sugar?

I was on metformin while on optifast as well, and I spent alot of time on the throne.  I had optitrots, and couldn't believe what was exiting my body.  I'm pretty sure this is common - you're emptying the yukky stuff out of your liver and it's gotta go somewhere, right.  And your body is emptying as well as a prep for surgery - you wanna be squeaky clean for this one.  Keep an eye on your sugars as suggested, and just let your body do what it knows to do.  If you're alarmed by anything, contact your centre.

BTW, I took my last metformin the morning of surgery, and haven't taken any since - my sugars have completely normalized and I am no longer considered diabetic.

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

Thanks Megan....BS are good and things have settled down today....i am really hoping to get off my meds as well. Since my HbA1C is within normal range...my diabetes team is suggesting not taking any of my BS meds postop until i have my regular visit....of course if BS start to worsen i will restart them. congrats on losing the "diabetic" moniker.

I didn't really do the optitrots thing, (yay).  I had been taking Metformin up until the day I started optifast.   I guess my blood sugars were close enough to normal just through dieting and exercising up until that point so my surgeon took me off of metformin when I started optifast.  I was to monitor my blood sugars carefully and did, but I have never needed anything since then!  What a great feeling  :)

All the best!

Same here, Laura.  I just started Optifast today and Dr. Reed instructed me to stop taking metformin as of today.

I'm hoping to skip the Optitrots, but, whatever...  It's better than barfing!

Ooh, that sounds unpleasant.

in credibly unpleasant. I've always tended toward constipation, and optifast was the worst.... still need to keep totally on top of that.
