Twisting, knotting pain when bending over.

Hi there,

I had RNY surgery a year ago last July and twice in the last couple of weeks I've had this horrible pain just under my rib cage and a little to the right.  It's happened both times while I was doing the same thing, bending over putting lotion on my left leg.  I have my foot up on the tub when I'm doing this.  I can feel something twisitng and knotting and it's very painful, hard and protrudes from my body and I'm unable to stand up straight.  It last for a minute or so.  I rub it while pressing gently on it and it goes away, almost like it untwists???  It happened for the second time last night and the area is still tender, not on the outside just on the inside.

I know I need to be seen by someone but I'm not sure who I should go to??  My family Dr. is not familiar with RNY and probably wouldn't know what it is.  Do I call my surgeons office here in Ottawa??  I have called and left a detail message at the WM clinic at the Civic but I had to leave it on the admins voice mail as I didn't have the nurses extention.  Anyone have any ideas of what it could be and who I should go and see?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Many thanks,
Sherri

I have NO experience with this at all Sherri - but I highly suggest you see your GP at the very least as it could be a hernia.

Thanks Karen!  I'm hoping the WM clinic will call me back shortly and tell me who I should see :o)

Hey Sherri,

This could be many things but definitely worth investigating. I would go to my GP and they can order the required investigative tests , get those done ASAP and then get then to the WL clinic. While you are getting your tests done, call the WL clinic and get an appointment,,with your results in hand you can get an idea of what is happening and touch base with both your GP and clinic to keep them both informed.

You are in my thoughts and miss you...take good care and keep me up to date. If you need me I am here for you!

Cheers

hard and protruding sounds like a hernia to me. Get thee to your GP, and make an appt with the WLS centre.

Monica could it still be a hernia even though there's no lump there all the time?  There was only a lump there the 2 times I've had this happen?
Thanks!

Although i am a nurse, this is not my area of specialty, so please seek the advice of someone who ACTUALLY knows what hernias do or don't do.

Hernias are an opening in the muscle wall,  that allow your intestines to protrude through. They react to extra pressure, so doing things like bending over, lifting something heavy, etc make stuff happen. So, it makes sense to me that bending over would cause the protrusion, standing up makes the protrusion go back. It could be serious, so you should go see your doctor.

and... if it is a hernia, your GP will know what's going on, even if he knows nothing about RNY.
