Thursday is Mike's birthday and I am going to surprise him at work, take him out for dinner, and then to see Billy Elliot at the Canon Theatre.  Can any one suggest a great restaurant near there?  I don't want anything too casual because he'll be wearing a suit, likely, because he'll be at work, and I'd like to dress up.  We've been to Il Fornello and it was good, but I'm looking for something new and interesting with amazing food.  Thanks!!

I am really not picky at all and neither is he.  We'll try anything.

My absolute favorite restaurant downtown is The Hot House Cafe. It's an Italian restaurant. They make great crab cakes and excellent pasta. It's a bit of a walk from the theatre though - it's at Church & Front.

There's also The Senator Diner - which is quite funky with it's 1920's (original) decor.

It's on Victoria Street, close to the theatre entrance.
And there are items on the menu we can eat.

there are so many fabulous restaurants on King St west, you'll find something just by walking down the street. My hubby and i had dinner a few weeks ago at Nawlins (cajun..mmmmm) but there's Fred's not here, the Red Tomato, soooo many.....

This is my hood! There is an Ethiopian restaurant nearby at Dundas and Church that is incredible, and a great healthy option for post-ops, but it's not fancy at all, more of a hole in the wall. If you like French food, I *love* Biff's Bistro which is just down Yonge at Front St. and is definitely suit and tie friendly. That's where my husband and I went before The Lion King. We let them know we had theatre tickets and they were very accomodating (I'd recommend at least 90 minutes though).

Thanks all.  I think I have finally decided on the "Beer Bistro" which is a little more casual than I was thinking, but I really think he'll love it.
