I just finished putting a new avatar on for me. Gone is the fat white cat. I kinda liked it but I really wanted a picture of me there.
 
First you need to find the photo you want to use and get it into the right size that OH requires which are size of 100x100 and no larger than 20,000 bytes. There is a site that I went to which is pretty easy to follow the instructions and crop and resize the photo. Save it to your computer then go into your OH profile, click on change avatar, browse to find your new resized photo and voila! It didn't appear right away for me in my profile so I thought it didn't work but then it appeared about 20 minutes later. The first site I used to crop the photo and save it was www.piknik.com but I could not figure out how to make it be the 100x100 so I found another site that could do that. It was   http://www.resizeyourimage.com/ . Both services are free.

My profile pic was over a year old, and I've def. changed shape since I loaded that one.  I'm not on OH too much right now, and haven't met alot of the newbies, but I try to drop by from time to time if only to lurk
