So I was just wondering how long ppl need to be smoke free before surgery.. I dont smoke everyday but once in ahwhile I will have one or two when drinking. (I know its dumb of me)  My surgery date is sept 26th. I dont plan on having anymore ever, but I just want some input and hopefully some reassurance that I will be fine for surgery.

I was told you have to be at least 3 months not smoking before they will operate. I don't know how they could tell.  I never smoked so it wasn't a problem for me. The sooner you stop smoking the better.

We were told 6 months smoke free before they would even consider giving us our appointments.

We were told in Windsor in July that they do random testing for nicotine. A woman asked if she could be denied based on smelling it on her because her husband smokes, and she was told if they suspected her, they'd test her and it would show if she was smoking or not. I'm not sure if all the centres do this though.

One girl who attended the same orientation as I did said she quit 3 months previously but had a couple of cigarettes socially the week before and they wouldn't give her any appointments. They told her to call whenshe was 3 months smoke free.

I'm from Ottawa and they told us that you MUST be smoke free but I forget now if it was three or six months as it really didn't apply to me.
This is such a high risk surgery, the surgeons want to eliminate any possible risk. My advice would be not to even have a puff. Its just not worth it.

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.
