So. I'm a VERY recent college grad - as in, my last ever final exam is tomorrow.

I'm scheduled to have surgery July 20th. My question - should I even bother looking for a job right now? If I get interviews, I do have to disclose I'm going for surgery in 2 months & need some time off right?

What would you do if you were me?

(my diploma is for Legal secretary/law clerk - not the most forgiving of industries)

In my opinion, I would wait if you can.  I know if I was looking to hire someone, I would not want to hire them, start their training, and then they be off work in two months time... and possibly for six weeks.  However, if that golden opportunity does come along, then I would go for it and explain to them that you have surgery booked (you do not need to disclose what kind of surgery) and that you could possibly be back in as little as two weeks time...just depends on how things go.  You are young, so your recovery time should be a lot quicker then some of us older gals and guys!

I think if financially you can wait until after surgery, that's what I would do. No sense in starting a job just to have to take time off. Good luck on your exam tomorrow :)

There are a couple of advantages to waiting.

The University students will be back to school at the end of August so you will have access to more jobs,

you will have lost weight, making it easier for you to get hired because let's face it, people hire us chubby gals last,

and finally, you hit the ground running without anything stopping you from making a great impact right out of the gate  - taking a month off or so does not send the team you will be working with a great message about the importance of the work you are doing (we know it is about saving our lives and being the healthiest people we can be - but others, they don't always see it this way)

IMHO - if you can wait, wait.  I just started a new job and then had to tell them I will need a few weeks off in June for surgery.  Technically they could let me go because of the 3 month probationary period and I kinda of worry about it.  Also I know I shouldn't feel guilty but I do because I need days off for the pre-op appointments.  If I could have waited I would have, but do what you need to do and things will work out.

I am waiting until after surgery to do most of my job searching because I think I will have a better chance of being able to make it past an interview when I weigh much less than my current 300 pounds. If you can afford to wait than I suggest doing so since your confidence will be higher when your weight is lower.

Thanks guys - you confirmed what I've been thinking...

Guess its off to the OW office for this girl. Not the greatest option in the word but pretty much the only one I can do @ this point. Sigh.

With the skills that you have, why not register with a temp agency?

I agree with everyone else , if you swing financially i would wait , u might be fine but for the first 2 weeks your body is adjusting and your going to be tired , i know i was , and not many companies are going like you training then telling them your off for 2 to weeks

I agree with the other ladies....if you are looking for a career job that you would like to stay at for a long time I would hold off until after your surgery.

Is there any way instead of going to the OW office right away that you could find something part-time or otherwise that you could do until your surgery?  Something that it wouldn't be too tragic if you quit on them?
