Cindy - don't give him the courtesy of calling him Dr., please.  He does not deserve that - yuck!

I call him "dent".

A true Dr. has his patient's BEST INTEREST at heart - he does not come close to that.

I don't understand the BMI thing at all.  My BMI was over 60 and I had same day surgery to get my band and it wasn't even an issue.   If these supposed Centres of Excellence are actually that good then why the hell can they not perform the surgeries for people that really need it.  If you qualify healthwise in every way but BMI then what is their issue?

Tracey, could you tell me why lap band is self-pay and OHIP won't cover it?   This is something I've been curious about...

It's self pay in most of Canada as it's deemed experimental by many.  It was covered by OHIP for about a nano second and then they quickly changed the wording in the Schedule of Benefits to specifically exlude the band.  I find it funny that they consider it experimental yet it was just approved to be used in teens to reduce their weight and it will be covered for them.  It's odd that they don't consider it experimental for a teen for it is for an adult.

b/c I think it would skew thier numbers and not make them look as good re: more complications the higher the BMI.

Yup, exactly.  Just like they did with the DS.  It's a all big facade.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick search- a number of bariatric surgeons in the US and other countries, require pts with BMI over 55 to lose weight before surgery. Here is some interesting links.

Ok, the first link I can't even access since I don't have your password and the second link is nothing more than an opinion, not a qualified study.  Keep trying though, we all need a good laugh on a Sunday morning.
