BMI 55 and over

As for the DS- which is not done here, I'm not going to argue that it's right or wrong. Beating a dead horse will not make it walk again. I am surprised when people suggest I should look into getting the DS. I don't fit the criteria for it and reading the long term complications makes me shudder. If you want it or have it- fine. Just don't pu**** in every thread, it's getting a little boring.

I'll help you out - here's where you started going downhill - and not one person had suggested that YOU get the DS, you just decided to get rude about it. I personally could care less which surgery you choose, but you're misunderstanding people's ability to lose weight to get to a lower BMI, and as the DS as well.

Good luck losing the weight on Opticrap.  Like you said, it should be easy.  And by the way, I absolutely couldn't stick to a pre-op diet to lose weight (lost about 5 lbs through sheer luck), and I've been successful with my surgery.  You've got to remember, the reason people get WLS in the first place is because DIETING DOESN"T WORK and the MO have messed up metabolisms, not because they don't want it badly enough!  Sheesh!!

And I don't think that MIS group surgeons, incompetent to operate on people with BMI over 55, are better investment than Barix, Graber, Harris, etc.

As someone who came to this board tonight looking for a bit of reassurance for pre-op nerves (my surgery is the day after tomorrow at Humber), I would appreciate it if you would refrain from referring to my surgeon as incompetent, even in the heat of a good argument. Your consideration is appreciated.

And as of today, by the way, my BMI is has dipped below 55, although that is no longer relevant, since the BMI 55 restriction was a very short-lived bureaucratic restriction at Humber, since lifted, and has no effect on me or my surgery, other than having caused the first of many almighty scheduling screwups, which are the only cause of complaint I have about the MIS Group at all. (I will surely let you know in four or five days - or my heirs will - if I have any other complaints).

Morag,

Your surgeon is NOT incompetent.  I am living proof, 4 years later and completely at goal and healthy.  ****  You didn't need to read this tonight.  Take heart please.

Thank you, Karen. Feeling much better in the clear light of a new day. Going to be a busy one! Anyway, will be offline for a few days (though I'm sure Leona will pipe up about me tomorrow), so shunt that flat ass down the bench and make room for my diminishing one, please! :)

Thank you again for all your support. (That's a shout-out as well to all the other old-timers who go out of their way to make things a little easier for us "ops")

au revoir,
Morag

Good luck with your surgery!
Sorry if I made you feel bad. Your surgeon is fully qualified and pretty experienced in performing RNY, and you did a great job losing this weight preop. Good for you!
You are in very good and competent hands.

Good luck!

P.S. I can ramble about John Hagen's role in banishing DS from Ontario, but it has nothing to do with your surgery or his surgical skills, so Good Luck!
Nata, a very happy DSer!

I want to 2nd what Kelly said. If you have a BMI over 55 you really should look at the Duodenal Switch. The stats for weight loss (and keeping it off) are better than any of the other surgeries - but especially for those that have BMI's of greater than 50. It's not performed in Ontario (because none of the surgeons are trained to do it - it's a very complicated and time consuming surgery) but it has the best stats for EWL and comorbidity resolution not to mention arguably the best post op eating lifestyle. You can get approved to have the DS OOC if your BMI is greater than 60. It's a great surgery and I'm so happy this is the one that I had.
Cheri                                                                                                              I the DS!

I had the Duodenal Switch!  Do yourself a favour and check out www.dsfacts.com - especially if your BMI is over 50!

My BMI was over 60 when I applied for Out of Country approval.  I had chosen to go to Barix, and Dr Pop had agreed to do the surgery but OHIP felt that I was to high risk for Barix and sent me to the Cleveland Clinic in OHIO.  I was so angry at first, but I am so happy now.  Dr Schauer is the best!!!  He will consider working with patients that have been denied surgery elsewhere, and has worked with patients in the 800 lb range.  I was to have the RnY, but he felt that I should get the VSG and I am so happy he did that.  He has patients that have come from as far as the middle east.  I suggest you call OHIP and request to go to Cleveland for the surgery, and they even have a Clinic in Toronto for follow-up.

Don't let this discourage you...keep fighting for what you need!!!
