Topic: RE: Post RNY ??? Dumping vs. Late Dumping???
I hope they are able to find out if you have something physically that can be done.  How many calories a day are you taking in (some nutritionists suggest a caloric level that presumjes a lot more physical activity than many/most people get)? Are you exercising (even a little) on a regular basis to give your metabolism a boost?  (I confess that I am the "I-hate-to-exercise" queen... or at least the princess.  I am simply amazed at the people who become "gym rats" after their WLS, because my surgery did not change the fact that I find exercise to be boring/annoying and have never ONCE felt that "endorphin high".  I also know, though, that I *might* actually lose the extra 5 pounds that I would like to get off of my thighs if I *did* more exercise.)

I hope you find an answer.

Hi Lora,
First let me compliment you on your journey.... wow you look TERRIFIC!!! My surgery was 8/24/07 and I almost look like the day they rolled me into surgery. You're truly an inspiration.
The reason the dietician talked about dumping with to few carbs... was actually referring to a low blood sugar because of "too few carbs"... then by eating carbs... my body would utilize the carbs and then go into late stage dumping (potentially... again depending on the type of carbs I ingested as you pointed out).  My problem remains ...no matter how good I am at following my diet... high protien and low carb combination... journaling , watching caloric intake I cannot lose any weight after RNY after the first few months. I'm hopeful to soon find out via testing in Cleveland if there is something wrong that I can appropriately deal with. Thanks for your post.

Dumping can happen quickly or take a while depending on how quickly the sugar gets into your intestines.  If you drink something(or eat something with a higher liquid content)  with too much sugar (e.g., tomato soup), it will usually happen more quickly than if you have something sugary along with a dense protein (e.g. sweet potato with a little sugar along with some turkey)... because the sugar hits your intestinal system all at once.  How long ti takes can also vary based on how MUCH sugar you ingest.

What I do not understand is why the dietician would refer to your body's reaction to too few carbs as "dumping".  That reaction and dumping are two completely different processes.

Topic: RE: Upper GI and Endoscope Testing in the same day???
HI Robin,
Thanks for the post. I had hoped of driving myself to the clinic and getting the testing done... then go to a hotel room on campus and then see Dr. Schauer for the first time in the morning after the testing. i guess it makes sense not to be alone after the sedation. I figured have a cooler with some food and a good room to sleep in and I'd be fine til morning ...go to my appointment and then back home the next day. But rules are rules .. and if I want my Christmas present in January... I'll have to find someone to go spend the night with me in Cleveland. I could never dress my dog up well enough to pass as my designated escort for the day...smile. I do so agree with you... getting fit and healthy in 2010 would be the best gift ever!!! Thanks for sharing your story.  Best to you on your journey as well. Kathy

Hi Brandi.
No the Upper GI requires that you drink that wonderful chalky mixture and you cant' have it before the endoscope. So that's out of the question. I'll be so relieved to know just why I did not achieve the weight loss that I had hoped for. This will be the testing that sheds answers and hopefully pounds too :-). I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the warning about being careful in Cleveland... bigger cities unfortuantely come with security issues. Thanks for your comments. I'll keep you posted. Kathy

KATHY-I DID THE TESTING ALREADY AND IT DID NOT EFFECT ME THAT WAY, I WAS DIZZY AFTER WARDS FOR ABOUT 1/2 HOUR BUT THEN IT CEASED AND OFF I HAD GONE TO MY APPTS THEN WITH DR. SCHAUER.  YOU'LL DO FINE, THEY WILL NOT RELEASE YOU IF YOUR ALONE BECAUSE YOU CANNOT DRIVE UNDER THE MEDICATION.  TO ME I COULD HAVE IF I DID NOT HAVE SOMEBODY BUT ALL MEDS EFFECT ALL DIFFERENTLY.
HEY IS THE DOG LICENSED-LOL!!!

Good ol faithful....you gotta love pets!!!

Well for starters, i gotta say i empathize with this roller coaster your on! What a journey!!!! Im not sure i'd have the faith of weight loss in my mind after all those headaches. So good for you...for keeping on truckin!!!!

Is it possible for them to do the upper GI before the other? Or will your stomach have to be empty in order to do the endo? What a huge headache. Man o man i feel for ya hunny!!!!!

My prayers are with ya darlin. Hopefully your support system comes through and can help you out, so you can FINALLY get you to the peak of your journey of success!!!!

As always,....you let me know how it goes.

Cleveland is about 4hours from me. I've been there a few times though. Not to add any extra worry...but as anywhere else....watch your steps where you end up. Bad parts are scattered there :-)
