Topic: RE: Hello from Ohio..anyone had surgery by Dr. Custer?
Hi Angie
I replied to your other post about the lapband. I met Dr. Custer a couple months ago during a group consultation and found he was very thorough in explaining each procedure that is offered at Barix (RNY and lapband) and answered all my questions. He is a nice guy and seems pretty darn smart too!!

Angie
I had lapband surgery Dec 2004. Did not lose much weight with it (about 25-30 lbs because of the liquid protein portion of the diet). Many issues with getting proper restriciton in the band. For the most part, I could eat whatever I wanted. For a lapband patient eating certain foods such as pasta, meat and bread should be difficult if your band is working properly. I could eat all of those with no problem. I exercised 3 days a week.
I am getting a revision with Dr. Custer from band to bypass (RNY) in the near future. One primary reason for the revision besides inadequate weight loss (my BMI is 41) is the recent diagnosis of diabetes. RNY resolves diabetes in a large majority of people. If you have diabetes I would go with RNY for sure.

Topic: RE: Insurance Reimbursement
I wanted to second Valerie's advice and to point out that if, by chance, you originally weighed enough to qualify as Super Morbidly Obese (BMI of 50 or over) and you use THAT termionology, it might increase your chances of winning.

Topic: RE: Insurance Reimbursement
I've seen appeals won, however I've not heard of them winning in Ohio, not that it can't be done. I've been around for a long time and have seen many appeals happen and overcome. I know of one gal in Alabama who fought BCBS to reimburse her for her costs of going to Mexico for the DS because they refused to cover it. One loophole you can try is using the term "Morbid Obesity" and holding them to that term. Many contracts exclude "obesity surgery", but morbid obesity is often different in coding. See if you can get an independent review panel involved. These are just what I've heard successful people doing. It might be time to get an attorney too.

Topic: RE: VSG with Dr. Trace Curry?
He does everything but the DS and his patients seem to love him. In the 5 yeard I've been on these boards, I've not heard one complaint about him or his staff. My only complaint is that he doesnt do the DS.

Dr Myers is great. He isn't one of those surgeons who think they walk on water. He is very cautious, for example, I have a problem where I have low platelets. My count was in the range where it SHOULD be ok to have surgery without any treatment, but he said should isn't good enough for him, he prefers that it WILL be safe so I had a couple bags of platelets before surgery.
He also gives us his personal cell phone number so if we need something after hours we have a direct line to him. Never heard of a doc of any type that does that.
When is your surgery?
