To the people knocking Dr.C!
One other thing on this subject. My doctor was a little unorthodox in telling me to listen to my stomach when it came to my eating. Most of the peole on here are told anything from "don't eat salad" to " don't eat carbs". This also includes don't drink coffee or soda. By listening to my doctor he said dont deprive yourself from anything. Just listen to your stomach and it will tell you if you can "STOMACH " it. Yes, Pun intended. I am almost 2 years out and have not had to take any vitamins because I get it all in with proper nutrition. Some people might think Dr. Melvin is wrong for saying I can have these things. Is He? I eat properly and the only thing I cant is Sugar and I thank God everyday that I can't. I don't need it. Also, 1 month after surgery I was no longer taking diabetic medicine. I was told however I would always be diabetic. Didnt know there was a CURE either. Richard
Sorry I just get Iritated sometimes and sorry for the typos. Its early LOL.
I am going to try to inject a little perspective into this uproar, if you will be patient with me.
Do DS'ers get defensive? Yes! Do we have reason? Yes! Let me explain.
Very few people go into weight loss surgery without thoroughly researching what they are getting into. Some make the choice based on what insurance will pay for, some chose based on what everyone else is getting. Once in a while, some of us choose something different based on our research and a lot of the times - insurance be damned - we get the surgery we believe in. (I myself am self paying to have my surgery in Mexico - I feel that strongly about it.)
In the relatively short time I have been at OH, I have seen a lot of misinformation stated on the main board (usually) about DS. There was one post where it was said about us that, among other things, we looked yellow (???!!!)and had a bad body ordor about us all the time (??!!!). It's like someone telling you your sister is ugly, you are going to defend it.
Try to put yourself in our shoes - people telling outright lies about a surgery you have chosen after extensive research and education. It gets frustrating, so we tend to get defensive when misinformation about the surgery is repeated. We feel it is important for people to hear about all the surgical choices they have in a truthful way so they can make the best decision for themselves.
Bariatric doctors who do not perform the Duodenal Switch are not always as informed about it as they could be and they certainly aren't going to refer a patient for it. It may sound impertinent to say it, but I would bet that at least 90% of the DS patients in that forum know as much or more about the surgery than most surgeons who won't perform it. We are THAT dedicated to our research and education.
All I'm asking is that you see this situation from our side also.
Terri

Terri I am not disagreeing with you. There are some people that are not as informed. I don't agree that Dr. C was doing or saying anything wrong to be jumped on like he was. We all are dedicated to our research and education. I have been learning for about 5 years. I am sure Dr. C has more than that under his belt. To even assume that I know more than him because he does not perform that surgery is just wrong. We are all the same no matter what. Isnt it funny that the only people that took it wrong was the ds'ers. I was not looking for anything in what he said, Why were you? If that works for you , wonderful. He made his opinion and a few people jumped on that. I have found everyone to be different even if they all had RNY. My employees asked for Hazzard pay for my stench that I could not control ( a small problem with the salads LOL). I am not trying to be mean. I just take what everyone says as a grain of salt. I think everyone else should also. GOod Luck! Richard
Well said, Terri.
I have three coworkers who had RNY that didn't even know about the DS, because they followed commercials as well as each other and it was never presented as an option. I fault them for not taking the time to research on their own before jumping. Once I announced my choice, they researched and are now regretting.
