After having open gastric bypass, is it more painful than anything you've ever experienced? I've heard different stories, some say the pain was minimal, others say they wouldnt do it again because of the pain. Do most doctors give you good medication to monitor the pain? As you can probably tell.....I'M AFRAID OF PAIN!!!

I had open Roux-en-Y on June 1st.....the pain was very tolerable. You have a pump that you can use when you need to....that is every 10 minutes if you have to. At home I had pain meds but really only used them at night if I had to....now I am 8 weeks out and down 49 pounds! I would do it again in a heartbeat! Sue

I had open RNY in Feb and the pain was tolerable. My surgeon used a liquid oral pain med with local pain killer that was placed during the surgery that lasted for the first 24-36 hours. The first few days are uncomfortable, but after that its not bad. I'm sure if pain was an issue, they would give you what you needed. The most discomfort I had was in making an attempt to lay down in bed too soon. Stick with a recliner if possible, laying flat makes it feel like you are going to rip open when you try to get up. I'm sure everyone's tolerance for pain is different, but don't be afraid of having surgery because of it, just make sure the surgeon knows you are concerned about the pain.

I have to ask if there is a reason you have to have open?? if not then why not have laparoscopic..there are alot of excellent surgeons around that can do that..

Brenda, I have been told that I was too big in the mid section for lap surgery. I know there is Dr. Curry and Dr. Selwyn, who I hear are great, but right now it isnt possible for me to travel to cincinnati.

ooo that's to bad..we have some great surgeons in the area. I had open..the pain wasn't as minimal and lap..but I survived-it takes a little longer to heal and feel yourself again. I was off 4 weeks when i went back to work I thought I was going to die for a few days just because I was so tired.. but it didn't take long, I see these folks having lap all the time..one girl went back to work on week 3!! big difference in healing time. Good luck Brenda

Where are you going to have your surgery? I went through OSU and they are very good. I had Dr Mikami and he was just fantastic. I had lap surgery, but they will make sure you are well medicated so you are comfortable. They made sure I was. I am originally from the Chillicothe, so is my husband. Best Wishes on you journey. Hugs Julie

I am considering Dr. Mikami, I have heard good things about him. Do you know if he performs lap on superobese patients or not? Thanks.
