Reversal of procedure

Though rare, reversals are done. I spent time in San Diego recently & attended Dr. Wittgrove's (Carnie's surgeon) seminar. Someone asked a question about reversals & he said he had only done one in his whole career. Early in his career, Dr. Wittgrove had a patient that was very attractive & successful with a sales/consultation business. Her health problems were increasing rapidly due to her morbid obesity, so she opted for WLS. She was about 41 when he performed her WLS & she attained her goal weight in less than 2 years & her mounting health problems were resolved. She was extremely unhappy with her weight loss because she felt her business, family & social life revolved around food. She claimed her business suffered financial losses because she was unable wine & dine clients lavishly as she did prior to losing weight. Her family & social obligations became unbearable because she was unable to participate in various gatherings whi*****luded marathon food festivities. A few years after her weight loss, she begged Dr. Wittgrove to reverse her RNY & against his better judgment he performed the reversal. He said she re-gained all her weight (and then some) & soon her health problems returned. She died before she was 50! He stressed the importance of thorough psychological screening & follow-up with WLS. Loraine, think about discussing this issue with your surgeon & perhaps get ongoing psychological follow-up. This surgery can be such a wonderful thing for us down the road & I'm also hoping the bad days start going away. I just had my surgery 7 days ago & I still feel pretty crappy! My left side feels like someone stuck me with a hot poker (pain meds really help though), & I think & dream about food more than I ever did prior to surgery. I know I'll eventually get over these hurdles & this forum is a really good place to start. Laughs & hugs, NancyT
