I'm new here
Hello everyone: I just became a member about two week ago, and I'm very pleased and comfortable. I have been reading all your testimonials and is feeling better each and every day about the surgery. My two most concerns is 1 my insurance (UHC) not approving the surgery, and 2 If I am approved getting the through the puree stage. My aunt had the surgery Jan 05 and she is doing and looking great, the hard part for her also was the puree stage. Qustion: Do the doctor and the patient come to the conclusion if you wll get open or lap. I really want the lap to get a better recovery, but If I have to have the open that's fine also.
Hi and welcome. I had surgery in Nov. and also had UHC-I believe it just depends on your company's policy they have. I was okayed in about 2wks. after I found out they lost my paperwork I resent it and was approved in just a few days. Yes the puree stage is difficult, I just chewed the heck out of everything, couldn't stomach the puree. Good luck to you on your journey.
welcome and goodluck in your journey
I haven't had surgery yet but from my consult it seems weather to do a band or open depends on a couple things i believe your health and size how much you need to lose how high you bmi is
i'm going to have an open when i have mine because with the band it won't help me lose as much as i need to lose and i'm sure most doctors will descripe all the pros and cons about both (if it's a good doctor he will) and you and your doctor will make the decision from there
hope all goes well
Autumn,
I need to correct some terminology here...
There is a lap BAND, and a lap BYPASS, as well as an open bypass. So lap can mean either banding or bypass. So you aren't going to have an "open" bypass, but a lap bypass.
You are correct though in that patients with high BMI's lose more weight with bypass than band.
By the way, congrats on the weight loss!

Welcome to the group Shanita,
I am having my surgery on 5/6 and the plan is to do the Lap procedure. But with the understanding that because of my 5 previous abdominal surgeries it may have to be open. Dr Mikami assured me that he most times can handle the adhesions and scar tissue and still do the lap.
I was worried about the Pureed food adventure as well. So I prepared a little of everything and sampled it all and kind of got myself used to the taste and texture. It wasnt nearly as bad as I expected it to be.
As far as your insurance worries. Put it in Gods hands!!! Keep making phone calls and dont let them forget about you. Squeek as loud as you have to.
And we are all here for you. I have never seen such an amazing group of people in my life. Welcome and keep writing.
Hugs
