STRICTURE
debbie,
The procedure is not bad. I had 2 after my surgery. They give you twilight anisethia. It puts you lightly under while they put a scope down your throat into your stomach. Then they use a balloon to open up the closed area. They wake you right up and you rest for about an hour and then go home. You feel a little sleepy and aren't supposed to drive. You have to do stage I eating for one day and then work your way back up. You would only need to take the day of the stricture off work. Good luck,

A stricture is a narrowing where your pouch and small bowel (roux limb/aka malabsorptive limb) are put together. The incidence of this happening is anywhere between 2% and 9% of patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Your doctor will stretch the narrowing open to allow your food to more easily pass. Some will require more than one procedure. The symptoms are usually progressive difficulty handling foods that you previous were able to tolerate. I perform my own endoscopic procedures and almost everyone goes home the same day eating, drinking and feeling better.

Hello DR.Selwyn I have had 6 scopes and each time they had to remove several staples in the narrowing and sometimes the staples became like a weave and wouldnt let anything pass. They took a total of 30 staples out of me. Is this normal?Ialso have staples comming tothe surface of my stomach. My doctor said leave them until they are almost out then she will remove them.Just wondering. Helen

Dr. Selwyn would a stricture cause constipation also? I had surgery 2/25/05 just 2 months ago and everything I eat feels like it is stuck in my bowel or pouch. I have to take liquid laxatives to go to the bathroom. Sometimes I throw up with phelgm or have alot of burping. Why isn't the food that I am eating pass through the intestine and come on out? Also when Ieat my stomach or pouch area feels irritated and bloated. Please help! I told my doc and they said it was normal after surgery but now 2 months later and I am still severly constipated.
Certainly if they are causing symptoms I would also remove them. I have removed staples from patients GJ anastomosis before but most of the time if I see them and they are not causing problems I leave them alone. They are meant to hold the bowel together until it heals around them and the tissue itself has the strength and then the staples are not necessary.
Sincerely,
Dr. Selwyn
