Am I drinking too much or too fast?
I had my surgery last Wednesday. Doing really well I think, so far. I was in the hospital last night for a loooonnngg time and they discovered my left lung is slightly collapsed at the bottom from the surgery.
So, I am still on liquids-have progressed from clear only to full liquids. When I have my strained, ff, creamed soup-4 oz. I set a clock within eyesight and make sure it lasts 30 minutes. But when I drink water/crystal lite/isopure...whatever, my hubby is worried I am drinking to fast. I try to sip sip, set it down-pick up later sip sip. The thing is I drank about 12 ounces of crystal lite in 40 minutes on Saturday. I wasn't paying attention, I was driving. DH is stroking out and I don't know if what I did was bad or not. If I drink too too fast, I would vomit-right? Does everyone have to time how long it takes them to drink every glass of water? Have I streched my pouch already? I am worried...
Rebecca,
I am still preop so I cant give you any advice, but I share your concern. I am not really worried about overeating with the pouch, but I love my water. I am a guzzler, and I am trying to retrain myself to sip sip sip. I wouldnt want to stretch my pouch out on something with no nutritional value.
Good Luck to you,
Laura
I am almost 9 months out and I really dont think water will ever hurt your pouch. I just drink when I want to and as much as I can. I know when to stop and believe me ,you will too. You would be sick yes if you drink to much. Dont worry, you have alot to learn about your pouch and it really takes about 6 months. The fluid wont hurt you. Good luck and dont worry to much, your pouch will answer all the questions for you I promise.Cindy
I drink all day and can only sip and I am almost 5 months out. My surgeon wants me to drink at least 64 ounces of fluid a day and the only way that I can do it is if I constantly have something with me to drink. I don't use a straw because I was told that you can fill your pouch with air, and that's not good. I've consumed as much as 16 ounces in less then an hour when I am really thirsty. If you or your hubby are overly concerned, ask your surgeon. No sense in worrying about something that you don't have to. If you aren't throwing it back up, sounuds like you are doing okay.
You are still early out, but I was told that being able to drink more like a pre-op was a GOOD thing - it means you're probably getting your fluid in, and it means that the internal swelling from the surgery has gone down. So basically that you're a "fast healer" post-op.
I can drink almost like I used to. When I go to restaurants, I place my order and can usually finish a glass of water or tea before the food comes - helps me keep getting fluid in without breaking the "no liquid with foods" rule.
Early out, I did drink too much once. I didn't throw up, but I had serious chest pain! Trust me, you'll know if you're hurting yourself.
Good luck with recovery!
HI Rebecca,
I had the same problem as you with the collapsed lung but I had some pneumonia too. I just posted here a little while ago, because I'm still having a lot of tummy tenderness and I'm wondering how much is normal. This is my second day at work and my belly is so sore in the middle. It's never really been this sore in the middle.Maybe I'm just being overly paranoid, but when you hear about all of the bad stuff that can go wrong every little thing that aches makes you wonder. My husband seems to think it's because I jsut came back to work. But I only sit at a desk all day so I don't know about that. I guess I'll give it another day or so and if it doesn't ease up, I'll give Dr. K call.
I think that if you do drink too fast you will know it. I don't think 12 oz. in 40 minutes is too fast. Wait until you get to move up to the next step of the diet. You'll think that mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs are a gift from God. I was just allowed to move up to boiled/baked chicken & tuna, fat free or low fat crackers and bread, white pasta and I swear I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I bought Zesta fat free crackers and they are pretty good. I told my family that they taste like regular crackers and they just look at me and say "that's because you haven't had real crackers in a month." They said the same thing about my Log Cabin sugar free syrup. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you are doing ok. Let me know how you are doing.
