Carbs and RNY absorption Q?
I have been on a low carb diet and I am adjusting well enough but, I was curious as a discussion about absorption last evening got me thinking. If we RNY'ers malabsorb calories do we likewise malabsorb carbs too? If that be the case has anyone done any reading on what the RDA of carbs for post-ops is? I mean seriously this is not an attempt to eat cheesecake [grin or is it?] but, an honest want to know!

The minimum requirement for carbs is about 100 gm/day to meet the needs of the brain which requires carbohydrate as opposed to being able to use ketones which come from fat breakdown. I would think there would be malabsorption of carbs as well as other nutrients with the RNY, which of course is the whole point of the surgery. Simple sugars, such as soft drinks with sugar, etc. are absorbed high in the small intestine, so probably would be absorbed after RNY, which is why we shouldn't drink them or we could prevent weight loss, but would probably suffer from dumping as well. Hope that helps some. Chris
Bo,
I sent this post to one of our nutritionist (my personal nutritionist throughout my surgery) and I am anxiously awaiting her response.
I was glad to see you stump the speaker a little at the meeting. Good for you.
So, when I get a response from Nancy, I will let you know what her take is on this, in the mean time we will keep searching. It stands to reason that your carb absorption would be altered as well, however the body does readily break those down much easier and faster than proteins.
One of those things that make you say "hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"
