Down in the Dumps
Ew... not fun. Not fun at all
Peoples reaction to dumping syndrome can vary from having vomiting, to explosive diarrhea, nausea, light headedness, shaking, rapid heart rate, flushing, stomach pain, just general "I feel like I am dying" state of being. It can last for a few minutes up to a couple of hours. I think the longest I had an episode was well over an hour...horrible.
Some people just cramp up and go, some throw up, my dumping usually follows the same pattern. I am lucky I haven't had the vomiting, although I wish I could, not really much in the diarrhea area either. Although sometimes that's like an after effect a short while afterwards.
The first thing I notice is my heart starts beating really fast, then the stomach starts to hurt and I get queasy. I tend to get flushed, shakey, sometimes sweaty. Sometimes it is mild sometimes it is really severe and it's all I can do just to lay down and wait for it to pass. It can happen if I eat too fast, or usually if I eat something that has a lot of sugar alcohols in it, which I avoid like the plague. I usually can't talk, and that's a dead give away for my family and friends that I am dumping. (I tend to talk a bit...) So when I am quiet they know it's going on.
I still dump, and I am over 18 months out. I am glad I do because it helps keep me in check...but it isn't something I do on purpose, let me tell you. ICKY....
Hope this helps. I know it's a little graphic, but hey, you gotta know what to look for. No one said this surgery was a pretty thing... But the results are so worth it!
Take care!
Valerie
Thank you Valerie. You explained it very well. And dont worry about being graphic. I didnt figure it was going to be pretty with a name like Dumping. LOL
I got a call from Dr Mikami's office today booking my final appt and I missed the call. So first thing tomorow I will be following up with them and get one last roadblock taken care of before surgery.
Thank you all for your help.
Love ya
Laura
Yep we really are! Earl doesn't dump at all. Kinda makes me jealous, but I am kinda glad because it keeps me away from all those tempting foods that I would have eaten before. He says it's a dangerous thing for him to know he won't dump.
Isn't it funny how the same surgery can effect people so differently?
