Do any of you know if medicaid ( I think that's the same as a medical card?) covers the surgery? What all is involved, and what Dr.s in Ohio do the surgery through medicaid? Thanks for any info!! shele

Hi Shele H. I am in the same boat as you , I know that OSU Dr. Cook excepts the Medical card. and thats what I'm trying to do now. I have already got the application from OSU Hospital, and just waiting to get and answer from them to see if I talk to medicaid or if they will do it for me. Maybe we can do this together ? get back to me and let me know .. if you would like to do this together,, bye for now Lisa

Medicaid DOES approve the surgery, BUT each case is individual, no real specific's. I had Medicaid approve me, I have a lot of info on my profile regarding what all I went through. I know there is Dr's in Columbus that accept it, in Dayton, Cincinnati and Cleveland. Good Luck!

i know that it's covered, i have medicaid and dr. cook at osu did my surgery. i also had high blood pressure, high closterol. sleep apena and a bad back, strong family history of heart attack and diebities. get with your family dr and get tested. osu will send you a list of test that need to be done. i had my surgey in nov. and i'm down 57lbs and i feel GREAT. dr cook is the best.

I know medicaid does cover the surgury as long as you have the right qualification and willing to wait 6 months for approval ( what i'm doing now as soon as i get all the right paperwork together) i was told yyour bmi had to be 50 or more and have atleast 1 co morbidity such as sleep apnea, high bloodpressure, high cholestrol, diabeties. Dr Curry's office in Cincy does accept medicaid that's where i'm going and Dr Curry seem like a great doctor

Vicki, Our experience with Ohio Medicaid sounds oddly similiar. It has taken me 2 and a half years to get the approval to have the surgery. My approval floated around for 4 months before I knew about it. Everyone kept telling me they didnt have enough documentation of my co morbidities. There were over 200 pages in my file, from 5 different Drs. No one could just admit they had dropped the ball and made things right. It took me getting hopping mad and screaming really loud to make the approval suddenly appear. I had all the presurgery requirements met, and then they told me it had been so long that many of the tests had to be repeated, and it would have to be out of my own pocket. To this day I think they were hoping I would die, or to be weak to keep fighting and give up. But the more pain I was in the stronger my drive was to help make this happen. I have 2 more weeks to go of the nutritional counseling and then I will get my surgery date. But I keep telling myself, I am really not going to believe that its going to happen until I am being wheeled down the hall. And I am ready... SOOOO READY!! Big Hugs Laura
