Did you have any problems telling your boss about the surgery?

I should have a date in the next couple of days. Now comes the time I have to tell my boss. I am not sure he will take it well at all. Did anyone else have this fear and have a problem with telling their boss. Do you have any advice or words to help me through this? Thanks!~ Cindy

I was really worried about telling my boss... I actually emailed him... He called me and wanted to see me in his office (which is a different location)... I thought oh my I am in trouble... He just wanted to help me fill out my information for my short term disability... He was sooo cool about it... It was like lifting a big monkey off my back... Good luck!! I am sure everything will go OK... You have come too far to let anything stand in the way now !!

Actually unless you are real close to your boss all he needs to know is that you have to have surgery. With the HIPPA privacy act you do not have to tell them why and the Dr cannot tell them without your permision. You would fill out the leave papers and if they need info from the Dr then all he has to say is that you need surgery and the amount of time that you need off. This makes it easier if the employer does not agree with having the surgery, and eliminates reprocussions with personal feelings. This was just a little FYI, my daughter did it this way cause she did not want anyone at work giving her flack about it till it was all done. Shelia

Hey Cindy, Shelia is right, you don't have to tell your boss if you don't want to. I didn't! I work with ALL men and I really didn't want the bad vibes so I didn't tell anyone that I work with anything. I called the human resources department and told them what's going on and told them when I was planning to leave and return and they helped me with the paper work and told my supervisor. Don't get me wrong, they all were dying to know. I just told them I had some health issues that I needed to deal with. They "assumed" it was female problems and left it alone. I know when I get back "I'm gonna have some spannin' to do" (weights comin' off pretty fast now). But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Good Luck and remember privacy is a right! Temeka
