A little down
Hi Everyone,
I am one month post-op today. I have been reading the boards and I am a little discouraged that I haven't lost as much as most at this point. I know that I am not to compare myself with others but I feel like I should have lost more by now. I have only lost 24 lbs in a month. I feel like I don't eat enough to keep going, and I struggle to get my water in each day. I do walk each day and I do my gazelle. I joined Curves before surgery but am not to go until the end of March so that I don't hurt myself. Any suggestions on what else I can do to maybe loose more?
Julia,
24 pounds doesn't sound bad to me at all! In fact, it sounds real good. I think that is really something to be proud of.
And you know, it really is true - you cannot compare your weight loss to that of other people. Everybody's physical conditions are unique.
I had my RNY on December 13th and today have marked 50 pounds. I am so thrilled! And I think, in afterthought, you will be happy too. It just seems like it's taking too long now, but soon you'll be noticing a real change in your clothes and there will be a big smile on your face.
When I went for my one-month check-up, the doctor said I was not eating enough (never thought I'd hear that one) and that I should eat more to lose faster. So I started getting little protein snacks a few times a day like string cheese. It helped! And keep working on those fluids - you will eventually be able to get them all in. Don't see how anybody could, at first. But you will feel better and lose faster if you do.
Don't be discouraged! You are doing well. Besides, people who lose extremely fast have big problems with leftover, baggy skin! You don't want that.
Take care!

Julia,
Ditto what Kitty said! But you know I am feeling ya big time. You sound just like me! I said the same words as you at 4 weeks out!
It's hard to put it in perspective when you see people losing more than that, but there are people that have lost less....typically the bigger you are the faster it comes off at first...remember I said typically, not always!
I had lost I think 28 pounds in 4 weeks and was all depressed about it! Imagine that, because when was the last time you lost 24 or 28 pounds in a month???!! You are still getting over what I call the surgery blues, tired, etc. It gets better, just think if you lost that in one month, where you will be in two?!?!
I think you are right on track for you. And Kitty is right too, when you can get more fluids and calories in, your body will kick it up a notch and BAM! There ya go!
Do yourself a favor, put your scales away. Take measurements, and go by that. Weigh yourself maybe once or twice a month. Makes the losses seem that much better!
Hang in there kiddo, summers comin' and the weight's a goin'!
Hugs,
Valerie
Julia,
I feel the same way. I am out a little over 2 weeks and only lost 8 pounds. The first 2 weeks I had less than 50 cal per day and I still can't figure out why I didn't lose weight quickly. After all, eating nothing is ridiculus without weight loss.
Some say that we are going through starvation mode and our body will lose weight when we start eating some. I'm not sure, but it has been so frustrating for me that I wonder if it has been worth it. Every day I get on the scales and it DOESN'T MOVE. I don't get it.
Well, anyway, you are not alone. Let's hope the scales move. Terri
