According to my dietician, eventually lactose intolerancy should not happen. At first you may have some but probably not long term. My mom and aunt have both had wls and unfortunately they are both lactose intolerant. I am not though. And thank god cause cheese and yogurt are good sources of protein. They both had open rny, and mine was lap, I dont know if that has anything to do with it or not???

Autumn, I had a LAP RNY on Jan 6th and I've been drinking milk since week one. It's one of my main sources of protein. No Probs!! Eric

Hi Autumn, I am just 13 days out and have no problems with milk. I am so glad ~ I love milk! I did feel a bit ookey when I ate pureed cottage cheese for the first time on day 8... but it has since subsided and nothing dairy on my puree diet makes me feel yucky!!! Hugs ~Deb

I have been drinking fat free skim milk since the day I got home from the hospital (about 3 weeks ago). I haven't had any problems. It is actually the thing that makes me feel semi normal in the morning as I used to have it everyday for breakfast (well it was 2% then) pre-op!

Hi Autumn. I had open RNY on October 27th, 2004. I've had dairy from the day I was home w/o any problems. I began drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast carb conscious, one scoop of Isopure protein (25g) and fat free milk for breakfast almost everyday and still do. You are correct, it is an individual thing. I was also able to eat cottage cheese my first week home, but I have heard others that could not. You'll just have to try a little at a time and see what happens. Best of luck!
