My son
Tommorrow is the big day for my sons surgery with Doc.Curry. He is having lap-band and is so nervous. I am too for him. Anyway he has been on liquids for 10 days and lost 22lbs. Hooray......Anyway, can anyone tell me what is next? He said he is on clear liquid for another week. Then full liquid for another 3 weeks. He doesnt get a fill for 4 weeks. Is he still going to be hungry or because the stoma is small will he be like we are in the beginning. He is so week and starving to death he said lol, I doubt that. If anyone had the band can you answer this question for me. Also I hope you can all say a little extra prayer for my son the policeman. I will post tomorrow and let you all know how he is. Thanks all my dear friends,Cindy
I did not have the lap band procedure but I had to stay on low-sugar and low-fat for several days and was was on clear liquids for 2 weeks after. Even though my stomach was very sore, I did crave foods and wanted to eat everything in sight especially at first. Toward the end of 2 weeks I felt very weak but finally got to starting having full liquids. Believe me, it seemed like "pheasant under glass!"
I will pray for your dear son. And I am now sending him all my best hopes and wishes for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery.

Hi Cindy! Yea for your son!!! Banding is just so much easier on the body...he will recover very quickly.
Every Dr. is different as far as the progression of diet goes. Dr. Needleman at OSU is not so strict. I didn't have any pre-op diet, only no eating after midnight the night before. Then I was on clear liquids in the hospital overnight, on to full liquids for a week, then on to mushies. I was able to start regular foods at 3 weeks. I was fine, but everyone is different as far as what they tolerate and when.
He will have swelling of the tummy after surgery and so couldn't eat regular foods even if he wanted right away. You have automatic restriction for a few weeks. Then as the swelling goes down, he will get more hungry and will notice that a cup of yogurt that used to keep him full for 3 1/2 hours now only keeps him full for 1-2 hours. This is normal, it is just swelling going down.
The main difference between bandsters and RNY is that the opening between the pouches is much wider when the band is in place, but not filled. With RNY, it has to be made as small as possible right off the bat because it can't be adjusted. So we can eat more and progress faster usually.
Dr. Needleman won't do a fill until you are 6 weeks out (see, told you Dr's are different), but is not stingy with the amount he fills with. He said that he will put in enough to give proper restriction based on the pics from Flouro. Not sure what Dr. C's policy is on fills.
Have your son contact Dr. C if he starts getting too hungry in a very short period of time. Maybe he will adjust his eating progression based on how he feels. I know that I was pretty hungry about 2 - 2.5 weeks out. Thank goodness for peanut butter on crackers!
Please feel free to email me...or your son can! I was there not too long ago! I actually go for my first fill on Friday. I'll post and let you know how it goes!
