Will I ever be able to not focus on WLS?

Hi everyone, I have a question for the post-ops. As might be expected, I have a hard time focusing on anything but WLS right now. But, afterwards, does the WLS eventually get to be secondary to other things in life? I completely understand that my whole life is about to change, but how long does it take before you aren't totally consumed by the WLS anymore? Any feedback will be appreciated!

I was the same way but I lost my need to focus on it right after surgery! I know what I have to do to be healthy, so the surgery is secondary. I'm sure everyone who knows me got sick of hearing about it and now I am sick of talking about it. Hang in there...you'll soon be tired of letting the thought of surgery consume your life!

Thanks, Cathy! I was hoping for an answer similar to this. I chuckled when you said you are now getting sick talking about it...I'm hoping I get that way too. Thanks for your comforting response! Denise

Hi Denise, I just had to say that reading your post brought back a lot of memories from before my surgery. I was the same way. I was fixed on researching the surgery and getting approved and tests completed. I am about 8 months out right now. Life is so busy that sometimes I forget the food part and surgery all together. I agree that it slips into the background because you are blossoming into the new life and it becomes so busy that you forget how you got there. This was the greatest thing I ever did for myself. It does start to become less of a focus but it is always the cause for all of the new and better things in life. Best of luck on your journey.

Thanks, Debbie! I was hoping this would be the answer. I know I'm going to be ready to start my new life and I don't want to be obsessed by this day after day. Congrats on your success and thanks for posting. Denise

For me, after the first couple weeks, I didn't think too much about the surgery except for the abdominal binder that annoyed me. What I'm sick of is thinking about food and fluids and protein and making sure I get them all in every day. I'm also sick of reminding myself to sip, but if I don't, I really pay for it. I'm looking forward to the day I feel NORMAL again, and all this is just automatic.

Hi Sherry, I think you hit the nail on the head. I also look forward to the day I feel Normal again and everything is automatic. I know a number of long term post-ops (years out from surgery) and they ARE able to behave more normally than at the beginning. I was just hoping that is typical and not the exception. Thanks for your post and Merry Christmas! Denise

I am 5 months out and it does get better. You have to still be on the ball and know what you are taking in but it becomes routine. I wake up and have 2 cups of hot coffee or tea and a shake (35) grames of protien first thing in the morning. Thats my thing and its a good start every morning. You always think about it because you weigh yourself all the time. Maybe its different after you get to goal weight. Good luck and we do deserve to be consumed lol.Cindy
